Several young girls were rushed to hospital with serious injuries after being struck by a car as they left their school in Liverpool this afternoon.
Police confirmed eight people were left with serious injuries, with seven girls aged between 11 and 13 taken to Alder Hey Children's Hospital and a 16-year-old taken to Royal Liverpool University Hospital.
An 80-year-old female motorist was stopped at the scene of the collision and was assisting police with their enquiries. She was not injured and has not been arrested, police said.

Thankfully no one killed and fingers crossed it stays that way... But driving at 80 is pretty dubious, we really ought to make people start taking regular tests before they get to that age.

Saw a report of a 75 year-old man to assess his driving the other day and it mentioned "exceeded the speed limit a few times" "didn't check mirrors; could improve by checking mirrors eg for cyclists" "decision making slowed" before suggesting recheck in a few years. Suffice to say it didn't fill me with confidence!

My uncle who has had 2 mini strokes, can barely see and barely hear is still driving at 80 something, cleared to do so by a doctor and an assessor.

I know for a FACT he is dangerous on the roads, but despite all our efforts to have his license removed, nobody will entertain the idea until he is caught driving dangerously or has an accident.

Its absolutely mental.

There ought to be regular retesting for everyone, but they'd never get the resource to manage it, or public support.

I don't think we'd be far off being able to automate testing... at least for the purposes of retesting people

I mean driverless cars are quite likely to become mainstream fairly soon too so no longer being authorized to drive manually might become less of an issue

Agree with others but think 70+ should have yearly checkups to ensure safety... Saying that 17-21 could do with the same as well

My little cousin goes to that school and it's not far from me. Beggars belief how a driver can cause so much carnage on that road
Drivers should be re tested every year or banned once they hit 70

Thats fine though cause if he causes a serious accident due to his age they can hold the doctor and assessor responsible i guess. I remember been in teh car with my Grandad when he was getting on a bit and he drove through a junction at about 60, he didnt even see it, and i dont think he believed my dad when he told him so.

Great, im sure someone being held responsible will be a great comfort to the mum whos kid he runs over.

Love it how everybody is immediately blaming the driver!

I have a school near me and the arrogance of the children at quitting time is astonishing.

They will "Steam" across the road en-mass without checking whether it is clear or not assuming that drivers will be able to stop instantly for them!

(The protocol that "Lollipop" people seem to operate under these days only reinforces this reckless behaviour)

Bring back "Green Cross Man" (Or maybe even the Tufty Club! (Damn I am showing my age! :D))

Horrible accident.
Ive always been of the opinion a full medical should be required every year after 65 to keep your licence.

Who would do these medicals? At a cost of what, and to whom?
That would be over ten million medicals per year.
40,000 every working day of the year.

Good luck getting that process assurred.

This.. everyone should be retested when their photocard licence is due to be updated (every ten years).

I'd even go as far as making a medical & eyesight exam part of the process

It'll never happen though

Permanently ban the old bag from driving. My grandad has become quite a dangerous drive, my entire family have failed to convince him that he should hang up his keys before he kills someone. Won't listen though as he is too stubborn.

Load of rubbish, the driver of the vehicle is ALWAYS responsible. You must always be vigilant when driving near a school. Blame the children for getting run over? Sorry, but that the dumbest thing i've heard this year. The driver being 80-years old rings more alarm bells, probably couldn't even see the steering wheel in her car properly let alone the road ahead of her. It's only natural that your eye sight and reaction speed decrease as you get older, so it's not even slightly wrong to suggest the driver was at fault in this case.

This /\ Orions belt beat me to it...
Everyone straight on the assumption that it's the old bitches fault..
Not a single bit of a hit of evidence that it was and I don't see any evidence of a crossing in any of the pics either...

Was she a muslim?

Of course not, not to go too far off topic, but we all know every muslim is a young male, who is an economic migrant, and is popping over here to join a rape gang.

On topic.
There are 1.6 million tests in the uk a year. I actually do think that some form of retest, like the fitness to drive test that is imposed in some people, rather than a full initial test would be a good idea every three to five years. The problem is cost.
At 10 m over 65, if one started it at 65, then every five years would massively increase the testing quota.
Also if you fail, can you keep retaking until you pass, or is that it over and done with?
Such a can of worms.

One think I should happen, is if eyesight falls below a prescribed limit, then the person who performs the exam should have an automatic dvla form to submit.
Then the dvla should remove the persons licence until they can provide evidence of improved eyesight.
Rather than batter the optical folks, it should simply be a form with the persons visual acquity.

80 is pretty dubious, we really ought to make people start taking regular tests before they get to that age.

I think we should also stop men from driving until they are at least 40 since they cause so many deaths on the road.
At least the old biddy didn't kill anybody.
