Anyone got one, i'm looking at replacing the Audi A3 1.9 (2006) with one as its starting to throw a few large bills and its generally getting on a bit now.

Hoping it would do better on fuel as well, its cheaper tax as well.
 
Budget is around 8k but its flexible, use is just general commuting and travelling around. But thats not really what i asked. Only other car i have my eye on is the newer Mazda 3, but they tend to be more expensive.

Your reply is rather rude mate, he's asking as the 2.2 Dtec lump has a DPF which without the right mileage / use will present you with problems. His question was to give you a helpful reply.

Don't do the mileage - don't bother with a modern diesel.

I certainly didn't mean it to come across as rude.
 
I believe Honda have moved the DPF right up onto the exhaust manifold so it doesn't suffer from clogging like others do.

I have read that as well, its an active system as well, doesn't require sustained high revs. Its injects more fuel to do its regen.
 
The 2.2 diseasel sport Mazda 3's are horrible engines mate, don't bother, I test drove one when I was looking at the Civics and they're far nicer to drive.

Stick with a 2.2 Honda, Type S GT on a early (?)09 plate should get you the better clutch without the DPF.

Or were you looking at much newer?
 
Mine was registered in Nov 08 and doesn't have a DPF, I'm not sure when they became standard. The only thing to watch for is the clutch can be prone to slipping, but I think newer ones have a better clutch. Very nice car otherwise but personally I've never been able to sit comfortably in it as the doesn't have long enough reach adjust on the wheel for me (6'5"), its either comfy legs and not being able to reach the wheel properly or cramped but in control, the wife on the other hand has no issues with driving it.
 
Dtec is the revised car and as far as I'm aware they all have a dpf? Not heard of masses of trouble with them though, assume it's to do with the design mentioned above

Which 2.2 did you drive?

The 185 is a very decent engine... you can judge it based on a single test drive.

I had the 2.2 lump, also had the clutch let go on me! Quite common on the older ones. One of the (I know I know) nicest diesel 4 pots I've driven and very quiet with it.

The 2.2 dtec is a nice engine, with plenty of power, unsure if it suffers the same clutch issues as the ctdi though?
 
8th Gen Honda 2.2 civic up didn't have a DPF. There was a gap prior to the 9th Gen with no diesel option because Honda supposedly couldn't shoehorn a DPF into the 8th Gen design (2011 IIRC).

9th gen 2.2 has a DPF but I've not heard about any problems with it.
 
I had a accord with the DTec and the DPF had to be replaced at about 78k miles, about 70k of those were motorway miles, but the 7 or 8k were local drives pretty much :(
 
Try both the 2.2 and 1.8 petrol. The petrol is nicer and not much worse on fuel.

No clutch to worry about either
 
Looking at newer cars, ie Mazda 3 2014, and indeed the 9th gen civic.
Will take a look at the 1.8 see how it compares. We already share a 1.6 petrol focus for short journeys.
Might also be the option of the 1.6 DTEC civic that's supposedly very good.
