M5 = staggered tyres for understeer
520d SE = square setup for... err.....

Seeing that you used the term 'square setup' you are clearly familiar that it is a widely accepted enhancement. BMW kindly leave loads of space in the front arches so the wider rears fit easily too..

Im prepared to be corrected but isn't DSC engagement a lot more intrusive on a non M model? As well as a 520d being considerably more difficult to break traction in than an M5.

In that case BMW 550i Luxury, square setup, BMW 550i M Sport, staggered setup, both 440bhp :p

I stand corrected.

I can see Clarkeys logic though a staggered setup is going to behave better in the hands of your average driver, although it just seems to be done for style rather 5has function

It can't only have function - my car has staggered 19's, the square version of the same wheels looks externally identical as unless you lie on the floor and look at the tyre width there is no hint that the rears are wider so no style element to the wider rears at all.

I was really hoping the Goodyear Eagle F1A3s would be out in 255/35/18 by now, but TyreReviews suggests it'll be May before they're released in that size, so it looks like I'll be going for F1A2s again because I want to get mine changed in the next couple of weeks. I was interested in trying the Pilot Sport 4s, but I don't fancy having Goodyears on the front and Michelins on the back even though I've dealt with much worse scenarios with tyres before.

Pilot Super Sports are on the same level as the F1s (even better, IMO). Pilot Sport 3 and 4s aren't like the old PS2s, which were UHP tyres like SportContacts and Goodyear F1s.

If available, judging by the reviews and countless forum posts, why would anyone get anything other than MPSS if they are available in the size needed? (apart from winter tyres and significant cost obv)

Not sure that's quite true about the 4? Everything I've read has suggested they're closer to the Goodyear/conti's

I can confirm ps3's are quite disappointing though

Because competing tyres offer better wet performance and for some people a balanced tyre is more important than one that is exceptional in one area to the detriment of another. This is why MPSS isn't fitted to my car.

For something like a Z4M, MPSS is probably a good way to go as it's a dry weather performance car mostly. But for a car you'll be using as much in the rain or whatever as you will in the dry I think the CS6 or F1A3 is a better all round choice.

Ah I see. Is the MPSS "bad" in the wet or is it just not as good in the wet as others, but better in the dry? I loved the old GSD3's on my MX5 back in the day.

It's not bad in the wet at all, it's just not quite as good as the others.

In isolation it is a fantastic tyre in all respects.

Presumably still pretty decent tyres though?

Currently I have P6000s on the rear and what was supposed to be a matching set of Nexens on the front. But the dealer replaced one because it had a nail in it with some horrible chinese rubbish. So was going to order a set for the front, but those should last a few thousand miles I'd hope and not cost much more than a new pair of tyres
