Hey guys

I'll start by saying I am no DIY expert so please go easy on me, I need some advice.

I have a box room that I want to convert into my office and I was thinking to build a desk into the room rather than buy a standard PC desk as they all seem too small for what I'm looking for.

I want the desk to run across the main wall of the room and was thinking of using a kitchen worktop as they are strong and could take weight. The problem I have is that they all sell at 600mm depth and I'm looking for something around 700/720mm in depth. Can anyone tell me where I could get such a thing or suggest any other potential solutions before I give up and buy a desk from IKEA :)

Thank you.

You can also get 660mm deep work tops but if you need more you're going to be looking at breakfast bars that will need cutting down as they are around 900mm I think.

This is proving a lot more difficult than I was hoping it would be - I might have to give a builder a call and see what they can do.

I just don't think the 600mm will be enough space - office furniture websites sell some big 800mm desks but I thought that might be a little too big... I might go for it.

Contact a local chippy and have him board two worktops together and trim them down for you.

If done well you shouldn't be able to tell, even if block laminated.

If anyone is putting these in from chippy shop then please understand the instructions for oiling the underside and keeping them flat and letting them adjust to your environment I've had a couple of jobs where they haven't been treated underneath and or installed straight after the plasterer before it was dry and they have bowed and twisted.

They need to be treated and installed correctly. It's not nice seeing it all in a skip.

Thanks guys - some good links here for me to look through.

I will need to get some tools to cut the holes for the wires to feed down and also brackets to hold the worktop to the wall. I was hoping to buy a black worktop that was ready to fit but I guess I can look into painting / varnishing one of these if I had too.

I took the easy route and got a BEKANT from Ikea. 160 x 80.

How much would you save making it yourself?

At this point its not about money (obviously saving money would be great), I just want to get a desk sorted. I don't have any tools so I would have to borrow or buy some plus the materials.

The only reason I ended up looking to build the desk was because I cannot seem to find ANY that offer the size I want. The wall I want to put the desk on is 2180mm (I was to fill as much of this as possible) and then the depth I was hoping for was more around 700mm than the standard 800mm - I may have to just go with the 800mm as it seems to be the standard - 600m just wouldn't be deep enough.

I got my desk for the box room from an office supplies company. It's a proper office desk with a left hand return, approx. 2m on the length and a 1.5m return to the left side. It should have been around £400 new with a matching set of draws. Got it as a return due to an office closure for £60 with an extra £30 for a decent chair, delivered and setup.

Might be worth looking on google for an local office supplies and giving them a ring?

Why do you need more than 600mm? I put a monitor shelf on mine which freed up quite a bit of space (We have moved house so I now sit at my desk).

Why dont you just buy a nice worktop at any depth you want from the reputable seller above which two of us have personally recommended? :)

Simply because they do not offer what I need. They are all wood material and I am looking for a plain Black surface. I stated in my opening post that I am looking to make this as simple as possible for me, I am not a chippy, I am going to struggle getting this right so I want to make it as simple as possible so if I can get the material sent to me as I need it then it makes my life a little easier.

I still appreciate all the help I have received..
