Quentin Tarantino, yay or nay?

In film criticism, auteur theory holds that a film reflects the director's personal creative vision, as if they were the primary "auteur" (the French word for "author").

How is it irrelevant whether we like him or not?
You're not makling sense.

It doesn't matter...

What are you basing your opinion on? Wether he can make a good movie?

If his films entertain?

If you don't like him this doesn't mean he is not one of the finest film makers ever in the history of film making does it?

Reservoir Dogs - Yay
Pulp Fiction - Double yay
Jackie Brown - Not seen it
Kill Bill - Nay, staggeringly pretentious
Inglourious ******** - Yay until about 3/4 of the way through and then it drives into a tree
Django Unchained - Nay until about 3/4 of the way through when Tarantino turns up in person and then it's double nay
Hateful Eight - Not seen it

For my money, Pulp Fiction is one of the best films ever made, and that has been a blessing and a curse. It's meant that Tarantino can do anything he wants and not answer to anyone, and the problem is that he does anything he wants and doesn't answer to anyone. So he makes a film like Inglourious ********, which is absolutely amazing until it turns into Brad Pitt doing a funny voice and Hitler getting shot to pieces and no one can tell him that that's a massive disservice to what has gone before in that film. He needs someone to tell him no once in a while. He's a visionary, for sure, but he needs to be tempered. He could make the greatest films in the world, but he just has to do his own stupid little thing and spoil things.

Nay, couple of decent films the rest dross.

In particular Death Proof, which is probably one of the worst films i've ever seen. Filled with pointless narrative that fans of his claim is 'genius', when from where i'm sitting it's just garbage that adds nothing to the film.

Tarantino is an auteur...

Wether you like or dislike him is irrelevant.

End of thread.

His status as an auteur (I presume you're referencing François Truffaut and André Bazin theory), does not mean that people 'must' refrain from criticism or openly disliking his films.

The 'auteur' can face criticism, the entire theory can be criticised (and Kubrick is a good example of this).

Once again, this is like film academia 101 easyrider. I'm literally writing a paper about Kubrick as an auteur this coming week.

Oh, you still failed to show me any academic body of work of yours when I have asked for it :o.

The Hateful Eight is one of the worst films I've ever seen, and he is the most overrated director of all time.

Even worse than the transformer series? I think its a bit of an insult to call Tarantino the most overrated director of all time, he puts his heart and soul in to everything albeit a spoil brat he truely has a love for film making that he expresses and I think that's admirable even to some of you most hateful individuals.

I'm not saying they must refrain. I'm saying its pointless.

Tarantino?

Some of his films are IMO masterpieces (Reservoir Dogs, Pulp Fiction). Some are great (Django, Kill Bill Vol 1, ) . Some are pretty good (Kill Bill Vol 2, Jackie Brown, Inglourious ********), and some are just ok (Death Proof, Hateful Eight).

A common theme that I always like in his movies is the dialogue. The opening sequence of ******** when Waltz is speaking to the French farmer who is harbouring a Jewish family underneath is floorboards is unbelievably tense.

Personally, I find his films a bit meh, but...

...was awesome! Unfortunately, scenes of this quality are few and far between.

Not yet seen Hateful Eight but I will give it a go, not expecting much though.

I actually prefer the latest Star Wars film to anything by Tarantino. :)

Doesn't make my opinion any more or less valid, but at least it's not a, "must be a good film because Tarantino"

That is where fundamentality JJ Abrams and QT differ.

Abram's made the film Disney wanted

QT makes films he wants.
