Large update - see post on page 2!!!!!!!

Sooo.......

Went out for tea with family, enjoyed the meal and came out. got the kids in the back door at kerb side and walked round to the drivers side rear door to belt my youngest in his car seat. Made sure it was clear and bent in to the car to strap him in, the drivers side door was open with me behind it strapping my lad in.
Next thing I hear a massive bang and somebody had smashed into the door nearly hitting me, door was smashed straight forward and then smashed back into my arm covering me in glass.

Damage is obviously the back door, glass smashed, hinges are knackered and slight damage to drivers door too.

I am assuming I will not be at fault but would like your opinions, also will my car be a write off? bit hard to say with the potato pics but any opinions welcome.
Was just about to put it up for sale too so this could possibly be a proper pain in the arse :/

Mate got a big fat D on his driving test for going past someone trying to get in a car like that, I think unless they say you ran out and swung the door open and they didn't have time to react it'll be their fault.

Hope you're okay.

Street like that i would be looking for cctv footage to help with the claim. Should be plenty.

Glad you are ok.

Lucky escape! I think I'd have been needing new undercrackers if that was me

Whether it's a write off or not... Wouldn't surprise me, not sure what the cars worth but on a 54 reg it can't be a huge amount and it's going to need 2 new doors from the sounds of it

It's probably still a £8k+ car though

Depends how they value it and how expensive the panels are I guess -you're also relying on there being no pillar damage too

Well, I had to physically bend the door back with all my strength to get it to close so I could drive it home, I cant really see now with it being dark but the door hinges at the very least are knackered.
Please be a write off :/

Thanks for the comments though as I could have been dead or seriously injured.

speaking to the driver who did this, they were apparently rushing their dying dog to the vets which explains why they werent focusing on the road :/

As long as you have them admitting this then you'll be fine, worst case they popo will be after them for driving without due care and attention. I would suggest getting it in writing and having them sign it asap, before their story changes.

My car has lights on the bottom of the door so when the door is open it can be seen. Do Impreza's have these? Seems well lit though and it's not like you suddenly opened the door.

Glad you and the kids are OK though!

** comment removed - No personal attacks** If you think those lights are on the bottom of the door for other people's benefit you should go and shake your head. A lot.

I cringe that people even think of doing this. You have been lucky but your door is basically a scissor if a car hits it.

Don't take the gamble !

The ones that do help are like on my dad's mk2 laguna, lit up strip on the innee trim of the door.

Puddle lights probably don't do much to help.
