Do you check out of hotel rooms?

The other day I overheard a discussion regarding this that gave me another one of those "Have I been doing it wrong my whole life?" moments.

I have always queued at the desk to check-out of my hotel rooms properly. It had never once occurred to me or my parents (who I watched do the same thing time and time again when I was younger) that there was an alternative. I just figured, "You check in, so you check-out".

However it now transpires that a lot of people simply don't do this. They either put the key on the front desk or a desk in the room on the way out, or more commonly just keep the bin/key (if it's a keycard which gets binned anyway) and walk out the hotel. The implications for the hotel are that the room takes longer to get ready for the next guest (as the cleaning staff will sort out checked-out rooms first), which could potentially delay the check-in of said guest if they arrive early, though no later than the normal check-in time, obviously. As such I suppose checking-out properly is a courtesy you should extend if you in turn would like to be able to check-in to a room early.

Not checking-out would save a fair whack of time in certain hotels (when there's a big queue of awkward customers), though it's obviously only possible if you paid by card, or by cash and had no additional expenses on the room, such as a bar bill or mini-fridge purchase. In addition, some hotels which now offer automatic check-out or check-out by email/app would also be a little different.

So, OcUKers, what do you do?

I always check out in case there is anything I disagree with on the bill; e.g. an incorrect room tariff or room service items that someone has put against my room incorrectly. It's much harder to get it corrected after they have your money.

Always check out if it's somewhere where things are charged to the room, most others just have a box to drop your card in.

A lot of bigger hotels you can check out from your in-room TV screen.

In general i will always checkout to make sure there are no errors on the room charges like someone billing a dinner to my room.

I always checkout, some hotels require payment on checkout, others I just hand them the key and leave.

Why keep or bin the key card? They don't throw them away, they get re-programmed and used again, to bin it is madness.

I usually charge a few things to my room so prefer to go through the bill before checking out. I've found mistakes a few times and would rather get it sorted then, in front of a real person, rather than having to ring or email later potentially in a different country/timezone.

Usually walk out if we go in one of the Disney resorts. Although they have quick checkout meaning you don't need to do anything just be out by 11. The Bill is hung on your door the day before.

When I used to go for work I would checkout at the desk.

Check out.

I'd rather have a strange look as the key is taken off me rather than miss something I would be required to do on check out, like in some places I have been.

At IBIS you can just deposit the key at reception, or leave it in the room. They also have online check in so you just need to collect the key on arrival rather than filling out some crappy form. Makes life a lot easier.

I always check out if the hotel doesn't offer such a service, even if it means queueing.

I check out. Means I can make sure that they are not going to try and charge me anything extra, e.g. meals charged to the room or mini bar use, which are not correct rather than having to sort things out remotely at a later date.

Only check out if I have put anything on the room i.e. food/drinks etc if it is a pre-paid room just leave key in room / drop off bin.
