Do you check out of hotel rooms?

I always settle my bill the night before or before breakfast to avoid a queue but inform them of when I will leave the room and drop the key off. When finished I walk to the front of the inevitable queue and say thank you and drop the key and leave.
 
Unless there is a self check out service I always check out, mainly because I want to be sure I haven't been over charged for my room!
 
Have been to budget hotels in the Accor group in france (assume it must be the same in some other places), e.g. Ibis budget, F1 hotels where they don't give you any kind of key, just a code to enter the room and then you just leave when you want... otherwise would always check if there's anything to do.

also I accidentally took a key home (a proper key that is) from a B&B in scotland once... realised after going through airport security

Always check out... Never even considered a not option.. Sounds psychopathic to not.
 
depends on the hotel, at a budget hotel there isn't much point, you can just drop the key-card at the front desk and walk out

otherwise I'd want to make sure anything I've been charged for (mini bar etc..) is correct and that my points have been added to the relevant loyalty card etc...
 
I check out just because I want to see the final bill incase of any discrepancies. Stayed at a hotel in the Cotswolds who billed us a few bottles of wine in our 3 night stay. Turns out one of the other tables were giving our room number at dinner the cheeky *****! They took them off no arguments but if we'd have just left they would have taken the money and it would have been a pain to sort.
 
Always check out. As others have said, I want any errors sorted while I'm still there, and I want a printed bill/receipt as evidence.
 
Depends, I've done both.

If everything has been paid upfront, and you know there's no additional charges, then yes I will happily drop the keycard/key in the express check out box.

If there's charges to pay etc, then yes I will go through the proper process.
