Range Rover Sport SVR

Put it in Dynamic mode though and it's like it has twice the power - it's like a full on sports car and the sound is almost ridiculous. The exhaust is loud enough, but its the pops and crackles on the over run and the blips when changing down that just make it like theatre! The suspension and handling in this mode defies physics - you would swear it had the weight of a hot hatch, with no body roll and instant turn in. Overtaking acceleration is instant - it's 'motorbike fast'!

Is that just an effect or is there an advantage to doing this in an automatic car?

Maybe to match the revs? I dunno really. Sounds awesome though :p

Drove a C63S a little while ago that did the same. Think the Mas GT does too as well as a few others.

The C63S has clutch instead of a torque converter. So blips on downshifts make sense to me
The power is directed exclusively to the rear wheels via a heavily revised version of the seven-speed Speedshift MCT transmission – AMG’s version of the 7G-Tronic automatic that does away with the torque convertor in favour of multiple clutches and bands for each gear.

I guess what I should be asking (instead of assuming) is does the SVR RR use a clutch or torque converter? and if it uses a torque converter is there any advantage to blipping on downshifts?

Love the look of the outside but inside, whilst I'm sure is a lovely place, it does look a bit bland considering the money you put down on these!

Seeing it go sideways is hilarious in that video :D

Its a ZF 8 speed, torque converter.

Torque converter still has to manage speed differentials when you change gear before it can lock up; so its exactly the same sort of feature.

While it's a stunning piece of machinery, there's no way you can argue that it's not at all compromised. Land Rover engineers are very good, but they are not able to break the laws of physics.

Great purchase btw. :)

I guess it depends on what you mean as compromised. As an RR Sport SUV, the extra abilities of the SVR don't compromise the car at all. Landrover are very clear about this - it's identical to the normal sport in terms of practicality and offroad ability.

If however you mean that the size and weight compromises it as an all out performance car then yes, I'd agree. I haven't checked but I'm assuming the F Type R, with the same engine, would go round the ring a fair bit quicker....it would be rubbish for tip runs and off-roading though ;)

7mins 39s

I had an F Type last nice, engine great, but 2 seater does limit its use case! Missus was out so couldn't go out with the kids to show some mates the car. :o

Did I see you go through Northallerton this morning before 8am??

A RR Sport went past me, exact colour however missed it to see any of the badges. Had a nice noise to it also.

I don't get the compromise comments either? Where is the compromise? Speed, comfort, practicality...?

It's a 4x4 that is capable of going off-road yet can be great (for it's class) on track, if the reviews are accurate.

All cars are compromised to some extent, this SVR seems to tick more boxes than most!

I agree, only compromise here is the environment :D

The compromise comment was in response to Gibbos statement " it seems more than capable on a UK road to be honest to the point I don't think its weight or high riding position is compromising anything too much.", which is implying it is comparable to a car.

As i said before, I'm not trying to take anything away from the very impressive capabilities of the vehicle. It's just important to note before we get carried away that it's not possible to defeat the laws of physics. It's very impressive, for an SUV. :)

Wasn't me - I was going (very carefully in the snow!) between Harrogate and Leeds

Well it is comparable to a lot of sporty / GT cars, its better, LOL.

I seriously do not see the compromise here, OK yes its compromised if comparing it against an F-Type or a GTR, but saying that so are most cars when it comes to handling.

Fact is this thing on a stretch of road will pretty much leave any car and should that stretch of road be wet then what is going to keep up with it in the hands of most people? Not a lot I can tell you that, it an easy to drive fast SUV. To get something faster for a UK road you would need something like an F-Type AWD....

An 8:14 ring time, that is pretty much the same as an E46 M3, don't think anyone ever said that was compromised on the road.

The only compromise I can think of is it probably does not feel like a sports car to drive, but apart from that it will cover a road very quickly, it will even do a half decent job on a race track, it can still go off-roading and be very good and its got great comfort. It seems to do everything very well, it might not be the absolute best at certain things but for most people such a car with this ability on road and off road is a dream. SVO did a great job I feel on this car, if one of these was coming towards me attacking corners and was airborne I would be chuckling like crazy, it's great progress that a truck can handle like this. :)

35 seconds slower around the ring when compared to an F Type R isn't to be sniffed at! Its a RANGE ROVER!

Look at this! :D

One second slower than an E60 M5! C63 AMG!
