Hi there guys, im currently running an i5 2500k @4.5.
Could i get away with just updating to a 980TI, or would i have to replace my whole system?

Current graphics card is a GTX 580

Thanks

I also have a 2500k and upgraded from a 670GTX and the difference is obscene.

That CPU at 4.5 handles it just fine for gaming. Shows its age a bit when benching though. But benching really isn't important to most.

You should be fine with that 2500k, although minimum frame rates in some games will be noticeably lower than if you had an i7. At this point though, I'd personally wait till at least GTC next month when Nvidia will hopefully unveil Pascal to decide whether you want to upgrade just yet. Pascal is rumoured to be launching around summer/autumn time, but nobody knows for certain yet.

Thanks for all the replies guys.
They are unveiling it next month are they? well i suppose thats the decission then. would them lower frame rates be noticeable using a G-Sync monitor though?

Sorry robfosters, never noticed your replies there mate. Well i got a GTX 580 at the moment so i would be expecting a big difference to be honest. I only want it for gaming any how, why bench when you got the whole of the internet doing that for you!? :)

The key word I used was hopefully. Nothing is known for certain at the moment, although historically Nvidia have used GTC to show off a lot of their products, whether they were in their final consumer form or not. The Titan X was shown off for the first time at GTC last year for instance, and the Titan Z the year before that.

I would wait for the Nvidia 1000 series if you can. You're 580 should still be getting you decent frame rates. The 2500K should still hold up just fine. Intel's CPUs have not improved a great deal in performance since then. (thanks AMD)

if your doing just the card the 980ti would be fine as your CPU is going to be your throttle in reality and thats going to be the same as the 1000 series cards. you could be waiting a year before the 1000ti range of cards we just dont know. a 980ti is still going to ace most new tittles for a good couple of years.

I think im going to wait. At the end of the day blowing 500+ on a card then a few weeks down the line a better one is released. I wouldn't be happy. If the card they show isn't better than a 980ti then i can always get it at that point :)
