Do charity chuggers have to be so aggressive and sarcastic?

Seems my local CO-OP branch are allowing the British Red Cross to use charity chuggers in the store.

Only one way out, so they stand at the front door in pairs and practically jump on customers as they try to leave.

One of them put out his hand with what looked like a British red cross leaflet.

I went to take it and continue walking but he held on to it.... Turns out this was some tactic to try and force me to talk to them.

Not to impressed the CO-OP are allowing this in their stores to be honest, I imagine for some people these charity chuggers come across as quite intimidating. One of them was back talking customers that just wanted to leave :/

Doesn't happen at Waitrose.

Indeed, they wouldn't dare get between me and my quinoa.

Seriously though I get where the op is coming from, go in for shopping, have to navigate the charity lot typically after a direct debit on the way out. My parents are elderly and disabled, they've felt compelled to talk to these people. Fortunately haven't been suckered into seeing one up.

I find it quite laughable that they're not interested in taking money off you there and then, they want you to set direct debits up on their £450 Ipads.

Would be happy to take some information from them regarding their charity but I don't like how they try and get people to sign up for direct debits there and then.

They are basically salespeople whose only affiliations to the charity is the commission they get for every DD that they sign up, most are not even employed directly and have zero base salary with everything made up from commission. So if you want to make sure that most of the money goes to your chosen charity, do it directly.

Wasn't a study done that showed that it ends up costing a charity more to hire these people than they get in return?

I just walk past them and ignore them. I felt rude at first but it's easier to not waste their or my time.

It's the bloody Greenpeace ones that annoy me. Every day on my lunch break he asks if I have 5 minutes to talk to him. He did this for about 2 weeks before I told him I'm the type of person who leaves the heating on when i'm not home, leaves the tap running when brushing my teeth and that I don't care about his crappy whales.

Never bothered me again.

You know chugger = charity mugger? You can't really have a charity chugger, that's like a double negative or something.

I spent 20 minutes talking to a chugger from Amnesty International. I wasn't interested in what she was pushing, she was just pretty with nice norks. She could talk though, she was non stop.

Not sure about nationwide sample but the commission to the salesperson can exceed the amount charity will get, particularly if someone only signs up to a minimum amount and cancels after a year.

Again it depends on the charity but a lot don't give a monkey's behind about the charity cause, they are simple salespeople and just have their pitch prepared for them that concerns the charity with some facts and figures thrown in there.
