This. The official FAQ says that under heavy stress the 3 draws an average of 0.85A, or a peak of 1.34A, so 2A should more than enough unless you've USB HDDs or GPIO LEDs plugged in or something like that.
That didn't stop me buying a 2.5A power supply just in case I ever need it, but 2A should be fine 99% of the time.

It's possible it's the quality of the PSU, rather than the max power output that it didn't like. A particularly noisy output waveform wouldn't do it much good!
A lot of places seem to be doing their own packaging. Pimoroni had it in an anti-static bag inside their usual sweet-shop bag, and RS had theirs inside a cardboard box. It seems like the Foundation just sent them out in the anti-static bags and told companies to do what they like with them.
