Hi All

I am wondering which of the two to go for, now from looking around it seems that the 980 beats the 390x in benchmarks at 1080p however I cant see many tests for my setup.

I have 3 monitors and usually when I can run games in eyefinity on a 7990 at the minute. GTA V is starting to push this card when I am driving around at speeds.

I noticed in the settings that it seems to be pushing over 4GB ram so am wondering if the 8GB on the 390x would be better for me as I run games on 3 monitors at 1080p rather than the 4GB in the 980

If they did a 6 or 8gb 980 it would be an easy choice.

At higher resolutions i believe the 390x will equal a 980 anyway and the mem is bonus. Might be worth getting a cheaper 390 though and putting a small overclock on it to save a few quid.

Both the 390x and 980 are likely to be a slight step down in performance from a 7990, and a side grade at best, just without the xfire hassle. I went from xfire 280x to 390x and I would not have made the change if one had not died.

For an sort of an upgrade, you really need to be looking at a 980ti or possibly fury(x)/nano, but tbh you have coped this long with your current setup, its probably worth holding out a bit longer for the next generation, which hopefully should be a good step up in performance and cause a price drop for current cards.

Is the 7990 really that powerful? It is amazing considering its age hahah

Yeah I hear the 390 is a great card too but if I am going to get one I might aswel get the X version.

I would have thought the 980 and 390x would be a fair bit better than the 7990 now?

Yeah the tests where the 7990 gets hammered by the 390 are just because it ran out of video mem, i assumed that was your problem, like the guys say if its not desperate ya might wanna hold out a month or so and get one of the new GPUs.

Wow this 7990 genuinely surprises me!

It seems to do well on even new games but as I say with 3 monitors once you start pushing up the GTA settings and drive around im starting to notice some fps drops so thought it might be time.

Are the new cards out soon then? I hate waiting as I end up waiting for the price to come down a little bit then it starts getting to the point where something new gets announced and you get locked in the circle of waiting haha.

I just set my self a target. And when that target launches I buy it.
