Basicly both are similar spec... DSG. Se vs ambition.3 years servicing and brakedown cover. Cloth seats, VW has 5 years warranty and Audi 3 years warrenty.

Golf pros: Moonroof, rear camera with front sensors, auto diming mirror, auto park

Pro A3 sedan: Its an Audi, slighty bigger engine, xenon lights, better infotainment system, slightly nicer inside. Bigger boot.

Theres £550 difference in price

Which is better buy?

If you can drive you don't need front sensors or a rear camera. I assume the Audi has rear sensors, which are all you need. The Audi looks nicer, has more useful kit, a better engine and a bigger boot. Seems like a no brainer to me. :)

Is this another one of those 'spec me a car in the Middle East where nobody knows the market, nobody knows whats around and nobody knows what residuals are like or what represents a good deal'?

I mean we've already said 'A3' and you come back with OMG NO MOONROOF so... buy the Golf then?

They are both brand new examples of cars that are good. Nobody knows what the deals are like. Drive both, pick the one you want, anything else is subjective personal preference.

It's not like you want advice on a 4 year old one and need warning that the Widgit on the A23 model goes bang or something is it.

If I lived in Dubai, I certainly wouldn't be speccing up a A3. :p

I'd choose the Audi 'Ambition' over the Golf purely because it has xenons instead of reflectors.

So people can't get advice on cars unless they're buying second hand? Chill out.

You miss the point, he lives in the Middle East and keeps asking questions on market specific cars nobody here can really help with (Ever seen an Audi A3 Ambition?), last time it was a car that wasn't even sold here. This time the cars are known to us but both are brand new so really what can we say? They are fundamentally similar cars and really the only thing to pick between them is personal preference. Highlighted by the fact that when we did suggest one of them he said oh it hasnt got a moonroof :p

The OP really needs to get himself on the car section of an Expat forum where locals who know the market can give him advice tailored to where he is - he'll get much more useful advice. Perhaps the dealer for VW where he is is terrible?

Same cars mate... only difference is they are much cheaper and have Japanese spec AC units.

In Dubai the typical expat would be looking at q7 or touareg... not my price range.

TW fox Ive come to the forum for advice and another take on things... not to meet the forum bully boy!

Well most peoples advice will be take the A3, its a slightly better car with a better engine. Spec a moonroof if you want one.

What are the cost differences between the two?

If they are basically the same then the A3. Underneath they are the same car, on top the Audi looks and feels far more premium, the dealers will "feel" more premium (if like the UK) and to be frank, a decent set of Xenon lights over Halogens (even projector style) makes a car look and feel much nicer.

The moonroof thing is a big sunroof I think? If so, do you really want that living in the middle east? My dads 5 series has one that goes from front to back and even in the UK the car heats up instantly if you leave the cover open inside, rendering it basically useless other than if you don't like to use aircon etc.

If the Audi is twice the price of the Golf, then the Golf!!

This was Fox's point, we don't have enough information and VW in one country is likely to be very different to VW in another.

EDIT: Just re-read the original post properly!!

For £550 get the Audi... no brainer. If you're looking at a new car then I suspect you'll be doing the same in 3 years time so the warranty issue won't come into play and the A3 just feels a much more premium car to be in, plus as others have said the engine is better, you're getting a lot more car for not much more money, the sunroof really shouldn't be important imo.

tbh people need to chill instead of attacking posters here. Not a friendly bunch some of you are.

even if its a redicolous stupid question, why attack them? be polite.

Most german cars here are very similar to UK spec... only passat is a totally different car and platform to the UK model.

This Audi a3 sedan is £15k and is middle model with 1.4tsi. The top 1.4 is nearly £17k and has leather seats, and reverse camera and keyless start. Other than that it is identical.

The Golf us 1.2tsi but has all the extra kit (but cloth seats)of the more expensive audi and £550 less

I am leaning to Audi as I think it will have more resale value. But both are great cars regardless of the badge

Have you sat in both?

I personally don't think a VW interior can be compared to an Audi one, even if the underlying platform is the same.

Ultimately though only you can say whether you feel the Audi's "premium" feel is worth extra over the VW.

I would agree re: your sentiment on future resale, especially as there is so little in initial purchase costs.

Just to check, I'm assuming a BMW 1 series is out of budget? In the UK they start a fair bit higher than the Audi A3 or VW Golf, but then pricing seems quite different where you are, so who knows!

Yes both are nice in different ways. The Audi is more relaxed and a good moterway cruser. Golf is a great city car that is very nippy and great handling.

Its not a clear cut choice. Its not like compairing a Ford to BMW

The Audi does not have moonroof, reverse camera with front sensors and autopark tho. A3 is a little more upmarket looking

You don't need the camera or autopark as it is a hatchback and easy to park anyway. Test drive them both, personally I didn't like the Audi interior at all and the outside looks bland but it is personal taste. I certainly wouldn't buy either without a drive in them though.
