Panama Papers

Even though Dave's done nothing illegal does anybody else get the feeling that the media have got something bigger in their locker and are just letting Dave hang himself out to dry?

To release his tax return is unprecedented, although not the full version, he has done everything he and we think is possible to prove he has done nothing wrong at all or has nothing to hide, but something tells me that it is all a front to shut the story down but the media are having a laugh with him and stringing him along and then will hit him with the big one.

I do think there is more to come from these papers revealing worse dodgy dealings with more and more people being involved worldwide.

Just gets deeper each day:
David Cameron's mother gave PM £200,000 gift

It's called a deed of variation.

Not really. Left wing media just running the usual rich Tory toff hate. Right wing media are just enjoying watching him squirm. And there's not much else in the news...

This is now beyond a joke. His mother gave him money and if she dies within 7 years he will pay tax on it. This is the system that many of the population take advantage of.

I don't believe so, since the papers pursuing it so desperately don't have access to the leaked documents. I assume they are trying to push a Brexit angle on it so that Gove can come along and make things like they were in the good old days.

I'm playing the worlds smallest violin for Cameron, I really am.

Media have done far worse to actual good people. As for Cameron? good.

At what point is a company set up in Panama of all places during this process?
At no point.

If you look at the post of mine you quoted, you'll see the post I quoted was talking about the inheritance tax bit, the £200k gift, that came out in response to this week's furore. It's nothing whatever to do with Panana.

However, DC paid tax on dividends due from the Panama investment trust, just as you or I would, and would regardless if where the company was based. Nothing is illegal in that provided you do, as he did, declare the income. Exactly the same applies if you got, for instance, rental income from a holiday home in Tuscany. You declare it, and any gain if any on disposal, and you're not doing anything illegal.

"But what he did was technically within the rules!! Please sir, can I have some more"

Hurduf complaining about legal tax avoision when he admits he willfully commited illegal tax evasion for years by never telling the HMRC he was working cash in hand....

Oh the hypocrisy

Remember folks tax is for the working classes not the champagne socialists.

The media really are trying to get something/anything out of this to pin on Cameron. As mentioned above it must be a pretty slow news week!

Asked about the £200,000 gift Mr Cameron received from his mother, the Labour leader said there was "possibly" a case for looking at inheritance tax rules.

He said: "It does actually reduce the level of inheritance tax that is available for the Exchequer as a whole."

Shadow chancellor John McDonnell said the prime minister had "effectively inherited £500,000 from his mum and dad and not paid a penny on it," which, he said, showed there was "something wrong with the system".

So what does that mean? Are labour now contemplating taxing everything you have ever received from your parents when they die, no matter when it was given to you? Help with university fees/accommodation... That's taxable. Help with buying your first car? That's taxable. That cash they gave you to buy a suit for a job interview? That's taxable... That time they paid for that family holiday? Thats taxable...:p

The right wing media are not innocently enjoying him squirm, they are trying to damage him to please their EU exit task masters.

It wasn't that long ago that George Osborne made huge political capital about Ed Miliband and the use of a Dead of Variation in order to avoid Inheritance Tax.

Will he be as vocal about his mate Dave considering the Cameron's have tried to avoid Inheritance Tax?

Me thinks some people stocked up on a few too many torches and pitchforks. This has just become a complete joke now...

Was there as vociferous a defence of Ed on these forums at the time? I think not....Not that either has done anything wrong, but if it's ok for the goose to try and make political capital over such soundbites then it's good enough for the gander

Nothing wrong with that but if you can't do it yourself then it's wrong. The media witch hunt is in full swing.

I don't think it made front page news at the time, wasn't it a one liner in a budget speech?

Yes, in announcing a review into inheritance tax avoidance in the March 2015 budget, Osborne said

We look forward to drawing on the particular expertise of the leader of the opposition. Unless, that is, the Labour party has executed its own deed of variation by then.
