Or do you think the Queen personally sends out letters to people when they reach 100 years of age?
 
These threads never fail to amaze me. There's a very clear line between those who understand what the royal family means to the UK and those who don't. This is great for spotting those who seem to struggle with basic economics.
 
I'd bet the royals work harder than most here. Sure, they might live in 'luxury' but they don't have the luxury of being able to privately go about their business in public that we enjoy.

I honestly don't understand the negativity towards them. I'm not a huge fan - I'm not about to host a street party for them. But I certainly wouldn't vote to 'get rid of them'.

Oh and Happy Birthday to the queen. Reaching 90 is a big thing for anyone, regardless of who you are.

She replies to letters every day and dictates what she wants in many that she doesn't do herself. I am not talking about the birthday letter crap, all this info is available online with a quick search.

All inherited luxury with a pay cheque that is not far off what many directors get for doing the same job: lobbying, signing off on important decisions made by people lower than you and generally replying to people who contact them.

No she doesn't. Her secretaries do that. Monarchist newspapers like the Independent might say she does, but she doesn't. She might write a couple of letters a day, but it wont be to the likes of you an me.

That being said, I support the monarchy, enjoy the Queen being our head of state and look forward to many more years of her reign. I'd rather I wasn't her "subject" though.
 
no one should have the divine right to rule over people by virtue of birth, its an outdated concept and needs to be gotten rid of
 
I'm trying to actually figure out what The Royals do actually rule over? And if they were here or not if there'd be any difference at all to my day to day life and if the anti monarchists are just a bunch of moaners who should move to France?
 
So no-one goes to visit Versailles or any of the other french royalty places after they got the chop ?

I guarantee people would still come and visit the castles regardless of if we are a republic or not.

It didn't stop her Uncle abdicating.

People say the Queen does good work/job, which is fine she might do some good stuff but if its work/job anyone should be able to apply to do the "work" she does. Its not the case though its a position your born into with all the benefits that entitles, the wealth, the privilege all the powers and proprieties etc.

The monarchy is a outdated concept in a modern world. I quite frankly find it bizarre that one of the last and strongest examples of old style aristocracy is still celebrated today.

And don't get me started on Prince Charles and the duchy.

I sure the royal family as people are nice enough but I would like the monarchy to be scraped. I doubt it will happen in my life time.

Would it be a net benefit to our country though, if they were scrapped? I agree that it's a weird concept and doesn't fit whatsoever with the modern world, but I'm failing to see any harm? Is your argument simply that it's unfair if the opportunity isn't available to everyone?

They might be no "net benefit" and the opposite could be true. I'm against it on principle mainly 95% for the reasons I mentioned above with the 5% being finding it odd we still pay them. While its a small amount why should we ? They could easily pay for them selfs imo.

The current queen is fine but I relay do worry about Prince Charles being King personally.

It must be a class thing, I rarely find those who dislike the monarchy and claim it is overly wealthy, self indulgent and hedonistic say the same about premier league footballers.

Yet the first thing these often working class rooted footballers do with their new found wealth is emulate the Royals with huge houses, exotic holidays and "gilded coaches" :)
