B2B Sales and refunds... law?

The sales team advised me on the laptop to buy based on the spec I asked for.

I checked online and the images shown showed a back plate.
Unfortunately the model seemed to have been updated minus the back plate since.

company says because we can access the inside to upgrade ram they don't see a problem.
we argue that in fact there is a problem because we asked for a back plate and don't have the time to dismantle 18 laptops.

they seem to be accepting the return but restocking fee on one we opened.

I will no longer be using that company as they lied.

Lol if you do that sort of purchasing entirely verbally.

Did you actually ask for laptops with a removable back, or did you just Google the model, see a photo with a removable back and then buy them?

ridiculous.

Get one for trial before ordering loads.

Get exact spec in a written quotation.

Restocking fee probably because they were built to order.

You messed up and now you expect someone else to absorb the cost and handle the mess.

I really don't see how he messed up when they gave him details he specified what he needed and then they sent an updated different model :S

Seems to me like you've learnt the hard way that a paper trail is always necessary to fall back on.

Back when I was responsible for mass purchasing of expensive items which were difficult to return due to their bulk, I'd always ensure that I had emails discussing my requirements.

You just learnt rule number 1 when buying something, never trust a sales person. They don't have technical knowledge so aren't qualified to offer any actual advice on what to buy, they are just given a product and are told to sell it.

Unless you directly confirmed/requested the laptop having a backplate assuming it would have because of the picture is naive (even consumer law doesnt cover that). Ultimately for the purposes of replacing the RAM you still have access as far as the supplier is concerned...

TBH it sounds like they have done you a solid by only charging a restocking fee on the opened laptop and not the whole order.

This is very much your mistake so accept it and learn from it.

Update -
They have accepted them all back as "unwanted goods" and are making us pay for return shipping.

I will never be using them again and have asked the county to strike them from the suppliers list.

If you ask a company for a specific specification and they then send goods which dont meet it why should the client be at a loss?!

It wasn't Just the back plate i might add, The power button was in a Stupid place and had no feedback (you cant tell its clicked), and the power cable connects in the middle of the side so that they wont actually fit in the charging cage. Oh and the Power adapter isn't an inline one its actually on the plug. Which means more than one cant be plugged in next to each other.

Completely and utterly not fit for purpose!

Power button? Did you get told it was in a different place?

Basically it's not fit for purpose for you? :p

The back plate fair enough if you asked and they didn't provide, but the rest is down to poor research on your part really.

Glad you got it sorted.

But striking them off for the reasons you are stating seems very unreasonable, nothing you've mentioned there is not in the realms of normality for laptops and PCs..

Can i get your organisations name so i can strike you off our list as potential buyers? :D

I think returning the lot at the cost of postage is more than fair. I personally would have admitted my mistake and would have taken note to look into purchases in greater detail in the future.
