Mountain Biking

What is the weakpoint then and how much am i going to have to spend over the two two? £500 surely has to be the maximum? The forest goes right up to 420m so thats the kind of lug your looking at for a broken bike.

Cheers man.

Most trail centres, the above linked bikes are going to be great.

Just remember that Steve is hurling down there on a full sus DH bike worth probably 2-3k+. I've never been before, but I believe it's a DH trail more suited to something with more travel.

I'll be honest here, if you take a Calibre 2 2 down the top section of Descend Hamsterly, (steve's vid) you will be in a world of pain, if you manage to remain on your bike.... :p

There's a world of difference in riding it even between my DH bike (200mm travel full sus) and my standard trail bike (160mm travel full sus) - but for general trail centre use, I'd say it'd be a perfectly good first bike. :)

:DHAHAHA yeah, not saying its not possible, but gopros always make trails look a lot tamer than they are, at on to that i'm riding an 8" travel front and rear dedicated DH bike.
Attempting something like Hamsterley descend would not end well for you or that bike, granted the top section is pretty easy as far as DH courses go and i'm sure its physically possible but no, no thanks.

However for general entry level trail riding like the bike is aimed at, the spec looks more than capable. If you have any intention of riding proper DH, without trying to come across as an elitist bike snob, you will have to increase your budget significantly or start looking second hand and hope for the bargain of the century.
Unfortunately MTB is one of those sports although cheap to begin with, very very quickly turns into a money pit as your skill progresses and you branch off into more specific disciplines of the sport, not saying it cant be done on the cheap but eventually cheaper equipment will be the limiting factor in progressing, unfortunately as good as damping/braking/materials are at low tier equipment these days eventually you will reach its limits.
you dont have to buy the most expensive equipment, but you do have to buy carefully.

I remember buying my Pitch off Hedge, and a friend talking about £200 dropper posts and his brand new £2000 Trek. I laughed and called him an idiot.

2-3 years later, I've now spent an unimaginable amount of money :p Oh and I own two dropper posts, since laughing at him for such a nonsense idea....

Agree with mtb being a money pit, i spend like £7000 on 3 different bikes in 2 years, starting off with a £600 hardtail getting me back into it after a long lay off, got the bug again, 3k canyon full sus, then wanted more bike now a kona process 153 for 3k. Not to mention all the gear, replacement parts etc you buy. But its all worth it!!!

People never seem to factor in the cost of all the bits - they just have a strict budget on the bike and ignore the rest.

Helmet, glasses, gloves, shoes, shorts, top, jacket, bottle, proper pedals, multi-tool, tubes, lube, cleaning stuff, stand, pressure gauge, pump, tyre levers. Cycle carrier!

My garage & wardrobe is full of MTB stuff.

Biking aint cheap.

Fun though :D

Been looking at an Aeris for a while, someone has like the ideal one on ebay and I offered him a grand and he said no. Is a used example of the base spec aeris worth £1200?

I don't even want to think about all that stuff. I buy bike stuff just because I'm bored in work sometimes. :(

How much is the base as new? £1600? Depends on how 'used' it is?

Same.

People need to stop emailing me deals - I can't resist a deal, doesn't matter whether I need it or not - a deal is a deal right - you can't NOT take a deal.

Yeah I did wonder "how used" it is. Also how old it is. New base spec is £1500 give or take a few bits. He does have a nukeproof dropper on it though. Which strangely isn't an option on the spec list. I would be happy paying it if it had very little use.

looks pretty tidy in the ebay pictures - it will be fine id imagine, the renthal bars and the decent charge seat would have added extra cost on the base bike, its £1200 buy it now and he said no to £1000, so just split the difference, you'll be saving a good £400 ish (more if you want a dropper and pedals) - very worst case scenario if the guy rode it a lot it would need new brake pads or a chain / cassette or something which is all cheap stuff to replace

Right. He's willing to let it go for £1000 without the seatpost.

Its a year old. In pretty good condition from the pictures.

Worth doing?

its a good price - I would argue a dropper is a must have, although the nukeproof one isnt the best. a reverb will cost you around £200

so id do the £1k and get a reverb on it asap
