Can my system handle a Nvidia 1080?

Thanks, that's re-assuring. :)

So no bottle-necking from the other older components?

What older components?

The 4770k is still one of the faster mainstream cpu's with only the 4790k and 6700k in front at stock clocks. And a clock for clock overclock means only the 6700k is actually faster for gaming usage and not by much.

You do not mention your current gpu, If it still plays games okay I'd be inclined to say wait fore the Ti.

I'm more worried about potential bottlenecks running VR with my i5 2500k and a 1080 card....either to do PCI speed or something. Been a while so not fully on top of things - but read the 1080 is 256bit bus speed - are the old sandybridge motherboards fully capable when comes to all that? :) It's bad enough (well mostly annoying) that my usb 3.0 chipset is marked as incompatible with the Oc Rift CV (I had the DK2 on it with no issues)
An OC'd 2500k is still be fine for VR for the most part(cant ever guarantee everything).

And in terms of your USB - is it just the Oculus system test that says it is incompatible? Cuz it's not always entirely accurate. I would go to some place like the Oculus subreddit and ask about your motherboard specifically.

Personally I'm considering dumping my 980SLI for a 1080.

I know I will probably lose some overall performance in games with good SLI support, but SLI sucks right now, and even games that support it often only get ~60% out of it, so at worst I'm thinking a sidegrade, sometimes a big upgrade.

Also means I can finally use DSR with GSync.

Selling both the 980s with Hybrid coolers I can probably cover most of the cost of a single 1080.

No, it can't handle it. If you put it in your rig, it'll cause a quantum entangled instability vortex of higgs bosons and the universe will end. Then who'll feel silly?

Your overclock is 4.3ghz, so '43' the other poster recommended '40' or 4.0 ghz so in fact your faster. Stop worrying your system is more than enough for even the next gen gpus.

Thanks :-)

This could well bottleneck your performance!

Funny... >.> xD

What gfx card do you currently have? If you already have a 980 I wouldn't be looking to upgrade.

Sorry I didnt reply sooner >.<

I have a Nvidia GTX 780 at the moment.

I usually upgrade after every 2 series of cards, so it seems logical to upgrade now.

I'm thinking about upgrading to the 1080, but I'm more considering upgrading to the 1080ti (when it gets announced).

I want a card that will support 1x 4k monitor (as the main gaming monitor) and 2x 1080p (for on the sides). This will probably be the 1080ti.

Don't we all :)

but unless you have money to burn, you have to consider the performance per £.

I've got quite a bit of money to burn luckily, it's a good time to upgrade for me :-)

Hiya,

It was the system test that said my usb 3.0 was incompatible. Searching the reddits at the time, and oculus dev forums, was frustrating, all they'd say is that 'yup there's some issues with some usb 3.0s so just buy a pci card or a new motherboard' and not specifically say what. Since it's now actually out in some peoples hands, be interesting to know if anyone received it that was also having the issues. I best do some uptodate digging.

Sorry....off topic. :)

Wish this card would hurry up and come out :)!!!

Sorry to hijack the thread but I have an i7 920 (Nehalem) @3.4ghz. I guess the 1080 or 1070 would be overkill.
I've had this CPU for 7 years! It's done me well but I guess I need to upgrade.
Any thoughts?

Hmmm, I've just noticed the 1080 from Nvidia only has 1x DVI-I/D port and the monitors I have run at 1080p - 144hz, but they only have a DVI port for that, no DisplayPort.

Does anyone know if it's likely if custom 3rd party cards will come with more DVI ports?

Or does anyone know how I can soup up a HDMI port to run 144hz monitors?

Im pretty sure there was a video by Jayz two cents showing that his skylake bottlenecked his build. But then it did have 4x Titan X's ......
