In terms of when the Mayans built it, how does the city location correspond to a star? Like how would they measure it with such accuracy that it ties in with the location of other cities??

Take a string, stretch it, look up. Connect two stars with it, cut it so that each end has a star. Now divine de string by 8 and you have a brand new measurement unit. The distance between the stars is 8 units.

Now build a city. When you build the next one, do so at a distance of 8 land units (not sure what land units Mayans used), mirroring the stars. keep doing the same thing with each new city, all will be good as long as you use the same units and you mirror the geometrical figures.

Done. ;)
