** The Official Nvidia GeForce 'Pascal' Thread - for general gossip and discussions **

A lot of people seem to have missed the fact the 1080 in these tests was set for 100% fan speed. Unless the other GPUs tested were running 100% fan speed to reduce/eliminate throttling (esp 980Ti and TX) then the results should not be taken as accurate. Both Ref 980Ti and TX will throttle a fair bit (10% +) from max OC unless the fan profiles are adjusted to compensate. I would frequently see my 980Ti 1450 OC drop to ~1275 unless a very agressive (and unbearable) fan speed was set.

So the numbers are skewed in favour of the 1080 in this test, unless someone can verify all GPUs were tested at 100% fan speeds. This also means the 1080 was tested under unrealsitic conditions as the vast majority will never run their GPU at 100% speed. It is a good indiciation of what can be achieved with WC.

To be fair looking at the max temps of the 1080 at 100% fan, he didnt need to set it to 100%. Perhaps he does that with every overlcolcked card to remove thermal throttling from the equation. His 980ti only got to 63C in his max overclock and the 1080 was 61C. From other reviews the 1080 doesnt throttle until 82C so clearly 100% isnt needed but equally the default fan profile isnt good enough on the 1080 for overclocking either.

Yep: I just checked his Titan and 980ti reviews and the fans are set to 100% for the max overclock results in them so its a fair playing field.

No, it doesn't really. It's pretty consistent throughout, minus or plus a little here and there.

OK,I decided to punch the numbers so you seem mostly correct now.

In fact at 4K the GTX1080 can sometimes edge out the GTX980TI - The Division and the AOTS by a decent amount.

Although in FarCry:Primeval and BF4 it is the other way around.

Game 1 - Fallout 4

1080P overclocked,GTX1080 is 14% faster than an overclocked GTX980TI.

4k overclocked,GTX1080 is 15% faster than an overclocked GTX980TI

GTAV

1080P overclocked,GTX1080 is 15% faster than an overclocked GTX980TI.

4k overclocked,GTX1080 is 14 % faster than an overclocked GTX980TI

Shadow of Mordor

1080P overclocked,GTX1080 is 25% faster than an overclocked GTX980TI.

4k overclocked,GTX1080 is 21% faster than an overclocked GTX980TI

Far Cry Primal

1080P overclocked,GTX1080 is 26% faster than an overclocked GTX980TI.

4k overclocked,GTX1080 is 18% faster than an overclocked GTX980TI

Battlefield 4

1080P overclocked,GTX1080 is 30% faster than an overclocked GTX980TI.

4k overclocked,GTX1080 is 26% faster than an overclocked GTX980TI

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

1080P overclocked,GTX1080 is 21% faster than an overclocked GTX980TI.

4k overclocked,GTX1080 is 24% faster than an overclocked GTX980TI

Hitman (2016)

1080P overclocked,GTX1080 is 29% faster than an overclocked GTX980TI.

4k overclocked,GTX1080 is 28% faster than an overclocked GTX980TI

Tom Clancy's The Division

1080P overclocked,GTX1080 is 11% faster than an overclocked GTX980TI.

4k overclocked,GTX1080 is 20% faster than an overclocked GTX980TI

Ashes of the Singularity

1080P overclocked,GTX1080 is 27% faster than an overclocked GTX980TI.

4k overclocked,GTX1080 is 32% faster than an overclocked GTX980TI

So an average of 9 games,an overclocked GTX1080 is 22% faster at 1080P than an overclocked GTX980TI.

So an average of 9 games,an overclocked GTX1080 is 22% faster at 1080P than an overclocked GTX980TI.

Not much in it - teaches me to skim benchmarks!! :p

i dont get how the 1080 is being compared to 980 sli but is too expensive, the cheapest 980 sli costs £720 but a 1080 is being touted at £620 so is it really overpriced, not buying one myself so not fussed just saying thats all

My main goal is to game at 4K with eye candy on. So my plan is, I'm going to put £100 away every month so that I can get the 1080Ti or Vega when it is released. That should hit 4K pretty hard.

1080 is pretty underwhelming really.

I suppose this is what you get with a (overpriced) mid range card.

Roll on the proper upgrade path = 1080Ti

I was wrong on the GTX980TI doing better as the resolution increases(they trade blows),but it seems you are getting around 22% going from an overclocked GTX980TI to a GTX1080 at both 1080P and 4K.

Im sure you would if the price had been £400 and you could have got £250 to £300 for your old cards.

I would have done it if the price had been £450-500 in honesty and got £300 for the old cards as pair for a quick sale. They seem to be selling around the £200 to £300 a piece on gumtree/ebay.

I know I paid £440 for each for my EVGA cards so double the improvement for £10-60 increase would be fine as they are meant to be the replacement but the £600+ mark we are talking about is just too much at this time.

Didn't realise that!! Even then it is around 22% difference on average at 1080P and 4K.

^ his cards were all set at 100% fan and none of them got to temps high enough to cause throttling

lets face it, most people interested in overclocking are not going to be using the reference fan - either water or AIB cards
