Black box technology is a fantastic example of human engineering yet they haven't found an easier way to find/recover it. Really think this needs to be improved.

What - like the inflatable rafts? The balloon is actually a really good idea!!
What I meant was aircraft already store compressed air to inflate slides/rafts, then there's all the life vests. Or am I missing something? (not intended as sarcasm).
How much does a black box weigh? I'm guessing it's something which was designed years ago and barely updated. The actual components could be grams and surely with today's tech even the casing could be pretty lightweight?
My point being that it wouldn't then take much to make it float.

It also has iffy reliability!
The actual components of a black box don't weigh much. It's basically just a drive to record data. What makes it heavy is all the reinforcement it needs to withstand a 300mph crash, gforce and explosion
Doubt you could make it super lightweight and still able to withstand a big crash.
