Dilemma over buying a car from a friend - W.W.G.D.D??

So some of you called it right! Here is what I said:

Which went down like a lead balloon

And I replied with this which I haven't had a reply too

Well it's done now. I don't know if I will get a reply off her and I don't know if I will speak to or see her before she goes which makes me sad but I've done the right thing

Thanks all :-)

Don't trust people who think "u" and "ur" are acceptable, or people that put a space before punctuation.

Its strange that a friend of 10 years would treat you like that. I know that leaving the country can be a stressful time for many reasons, not least financially (i've been there), but couldn't imagine trying to pull the wool over a mates eyes for the sake of a few hundred quid. Humans are seriously strange sometimes.

Some "friend" trying to stick you with a knackered old car so they can have some extra cash floating around.

From their reply it seems like they're pretty manipulative.

Don't lose a good friend over this. I'm sure all will be forgiven if you go and see her before she goes. This is why i dont like buying from or doing jobs for friends.

I don't think I'd ever buy a car from a friend regardless of the condition. I just see it as a massive ball ache and a risk to a friendship.

Unless it was a classic that I was prepared to invest in, but even then I wouldn't be so sure.

This situation has posed the question of "are they really a good friend?"

And I think that's quite an important one.

All the best with this. I hope she doesn't take it too hard and that the friendship isn't damaged by this. You really had little option (unless you're stinking rich) but it's a horrible situation.

Dodgy car missed and the same can soon to be said for the friend imo, she's going, let her go and move on, you don't need friends like that.

You've done the right thing but the entitlement your 'friend' is showing is beyond belief. You've been reasonable - more than reasonable actually - and she's not interested, she just expects you to fix her problem and buy an over-priced shed.

If it's really the immaculate, well-looked after example of a 13 year old car she thinks it is, she'll have no trouble selling it elsewhere.

She's just bitter because she knows she now has to sell it to someone who knows a bit about cars for about £1000 less...

Definitely fire poop through her letterbox, one for every exclamation mark she sends your way.

Good call tell her to go and sling her hook, if she is a true friend witch I doubt very much then fem them! ;)

I have had a friend of 15 years who pooped on me from a great height when I was down.

Lets just say, not spoken or seen him for over 10 years now.

Never ever trust anyone when it comes to money.

BCU I assume is the bus control unit.

£500 seems a lot when the reality is there are probably literally thousands in scrappers getting junked weekly.

Could be worth trying a few mini specialists.

Brakes though should be up to spec you are happy with and reflect the driving you do.
Brakes that will just scrap through an MOT arent going to stop you anywhere near as quickly as a new car so you are always in the potential situation of rear ending someone on something like the M62 if its busy and people start panic braking.

When she said: "We'd already agreed I was sortin the BCU out so it's me who stands to lose the £500 for that!!!"

If you hadn't agreed anything with her about work, I would have just sent it back with a smarmy comment. "It's immaculate, yeah?" Some friend if she's wanting to stick you for some cash. Nicely dodged bullet.

It's hardly immaculate if it's got electrical issues and questionable brakes.. if she does come back with a comment id simply say.. I'll give you 2.5k if you service, mot it, fit new pads and disks and fix the electrical issue. otherwise my best offer is 1500.
