i see that the new cpu 6850 is closest to the 5930k in price

but if I upgrade to the 6850 will there be any advantages from the 5930, or is there anything new these new cpu's offer?

Pretty much nothing, IPC gains are minuscule and the first lot seem to be poor clockers just like the previous ones were on release.

Don't bother broadwell-e has marginally better ipc but current batches don't overclock as well as haswell-e requiring huge voltage and heat dissipation to reach frequencies haswell-e reaches far more conservatively.

i suppose there there is no reason to upgrade as the 5930k seems pretty much the same thing as the 6850k, apart from a new name right?

then a worthy CPU upgrade from a 5930 would be the 6900k or the 6950k yes? i mean its a huge amount of cash to drop on a cpu if its only for PC gaming?

Then it might be better to wait on the new cpu's next year, some guy mentioned that lga3647 will be launched next spring, this new cpu seems it will be better than the 5/6 series cpu's

I would rather take any recent batches of 5960X other than this new 6900K. Things may change in the future but at the moment, BW-E cpus don't overclock well.

Frankly if you're overclocking then for hex and octo cored cpu's currently you would be better of with the haswell-e chips as the tend to clock better than bw-e and can therefore more than nullify the marginal ipc gains from bw-e whilst probably using less power, needing less cooling and less volts whilst overclocked. They also are currently a bit cheaper like for like... Obviously the 6950x has no hw-e equivalent

How would you know its a recent batch 5960x though? I mean, would a vendor clarify which batch a processor is?

Or is the assumption is that large vendors (like OCUK) go through so many units that whichever one you get would be a recent batch?

your latter point is what I mean. Any cpu which is bought from now should be J/L533 or above. And that should be enough to give you a much higher chance for a good one. I bought randomly, not from here, but from a less popular retailer and got a J602 which can do 4.5Ghz @ 1.207v passed 1 hour Asus Real Bench Stress Test.

I see, I saw your results in the other thread, that is a great chip!

May I ask where you got it from?

From the look of it the Broadwell-E is going to have a very short shelf life with Q2 of 2017 for Skylake-X being quoted.

I have just gone for a 6850K to replace my ageing 3930K. I will see how well it clocks and see what temps are like. 4.4Ghz will do me for day to day and won't be pushing too hard.

I'd be interested to hear how that goes as i'm rocking the 3930K still @4.5.

Can you do Cinema4D Benches and stuff to compare please? Would be super helpful :)

Which motherboard did you go for Gregster

I went with the Asus X99-A and finished the build, pressed the power button and greeted with error code 00, which means either board or CPU. What a complete waste of my one day off and not best pleased, as the box with the mobo and CPU looked like it had been used as a football and half the box was torn. The mobo box had already been opened and the CPU cover was just floating around the box freely. I am raging too much at the minute but guessing there is bent CPU pins
