Official E3 2016 thread.

Alternatively they don't want to show it because they are frantically re-doing it so they don't fall massively behind the upgraded consoles.

Better that than releasing a very underpowered piece of hardware and then never improving it or even following in Sony's footsteps and make a midgen console and **** off existing owners. Also could be to do with alleged handheld hybrid functionality, they could release 2 things alongside each other, a home console and a handheld. Heck, they beter release a handheld soon, the 3DS can't keep up these days.

Gimmick or not, regardless I'm already disappointed at Nintendo's E3 this year. The NX better be the second coming of Jesus to make up for it... or I'll just completely give up on caring about Nintendo hardware. It's bad enough having to put up with a terrible yet somehow very popular handheld (Pokemon can't hold 30fps, yet still sells like hotcakes these days).

I really do hope AMD give us some proper Polaris (RX 480) benchmarks at the PC Gaming event. Both Sony and MS really need to show off their new hardware, even if it's just a slim, more power-efficient version of what they already have.

I still feel it's too early for a hardware change but that's partly as last 2 generations went on longer than any one could have imagined. I'm all up for a slim version but ps4 isn't exactly big. I'm worried when the ps4k is announced it will split user base too much :(

Same here and this is a concern that many share when it comes to these mid-gen console iterations. The best they can do is price it very well and have it replace the current PS4s price point, whilst making that one a bit cheaper. Unless they do what they did with PS3 and completely stop making vanilla PS4s. That last PS3 was terrible compared to the original PS3 slim.

I have been gaming for a long time and yet I have never had any interest in E3. Honestly, I don't really know why but perhaps it is the same reason why I don't really have much interest in streaming.

I like to play games I guess, not watch other people talk about them and play them. I suppose there is also the point that a lot of content that is revealed at E3 turns out very different in the end anyway or it is not released at all.

Is it just me, or does anyone else just fail to have any interest at all in E3?

I just check games out when I fancy a new game and if I like them, I buy them!! :p

PC Gaming show starts an hour earlier too - seems its been incorrectly published.

Nothing wrong with that, youre just a casual gamer that doesnt have the inclination to keep informed about the newest games...

Well, I'm not usually bothered by the actual conferences themselves, mostly just PR people talking little of substance.....but the real meat of it is the game announcements. It's still *the* date in the calendar when developers roll out their big guns.

Say what?

How very dare you!??! I will have you know I am most definitely not a casual gamer! I'm an avid and competitive gamer locked in a casual gamers body by my wife :(

Knew I shouldn't have said yes :(

Someone pls haalp? :(

:p :p

But seriously, you are correct that these days I am a 'casual' player. However, even when I was playing in leagues in Quake 3 and banking 8 hours practice a day I wasn't interested in E3. More recently playing 3-4hrs a night and all weekend on Tribes to be good enough to compete in EU leagues I wasn't interested in E3.

Too busy playing to care to be honest! :p

So, out of interest, what draws you to E3 and why does it excite you?

Interest in E3? No but I always think of a room full of nerds like the Apple developers conference soon. These things always come across like cults that looks like they haven't had a good wash.

As for your last point, I agree.

Dont take casual gamer as a negative - from what youve said you largely fit the vast majority of gamers...

And why would anyone be looking to E3 with your history rather than Quakecon ;) - hax0r noob...

P.S. With gaming becoming far more mainstream and now making more money as an industry than other medias its not as atypical to have something like E3 be an important event outside of gaming, particularly one that hits a lot of news sites. We are just luckier now we have the ability to say ignore this when a decade ago it was bloody hard to learn of anything in real time (and in your particular circumstances E3s never really had that much to do with PC but thats changing)...

EDIT: To answer your last question as I missed it, Im very developer led (and somewhat publisher) with my purchases so very likely to follow what they are doing, rather than exactly what games are coming out. E3 doesnt really excite me its just one of (waning) focus of the gaming industry...

I don't take casual gamer as a negative, my post was a bit tongue in cheek! :p I am much happier as a more casual gamer and overall I am happy with my PS4. Even though I suck using pads I still enjoy myself :)

That said, if spending up to 8hrs a day in online multiplayer along with many other hours put into SP games on top of that is still casual gaming I have no idea what serious gaming must be like

As it currently stands, my PC only gets used when I want to print something. Shame really as it is still a very capable gaming rig and I am still a PC enthusiast at heart. I have considered replacing it with a gaming laptop, but it isn't worth much money now if I tried to sell it. Might as well keep it - it could come in handy as a door stop or paper weight :p

 I'm too 1337 to h4ck! And who said I haven't been to Quakecon ;) But yeah, I love Quake 3 and put in untold hours into it. I was only ever average though really - I didn't have the natural talent of other players but I could hold my own against some real good players so I was happy with that :) Been to plenty of multiplayer LANs over the years - most of them Q3 focused :D

Back in they day my monitor weighed as much as a small car so doing LANs took real commitment! Kids these days have no idea! :p

For me Q3 was ahead of its time in terms of game engine and movement physics. Gun play was also really well balanced and watching top tier duellers is also a good insight into how well the game caters for tactical map control too. I love that game but strangely when I first played it I preferred UT. I think also, for me, the game is the source of many happy memories, meeting online friends who became IRL friends from it. I am sure most people have a game like that. I really miss those days, bouncing around on DM17 with 280 ping and owning the jump pads with rocket prediction :D

It was only a couple of weeks ago that I closed my server down that I had been running for the last 6 years as nobody was using it. Sad day :(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(

I see. I personally don't really have any affinity with particular dev teams or publishers anymore. I used to a long time ago. The last devs I really followed were id (obviously I love the Quake series!!) and Bullfrog / Lionhead as I'm a big fan of Peter Molyneux. Interestingly, Bullfrog also handled the conversion of Q3 to the PS2. I was also a big fan of Bethesda because Morrowind was a game changer for me. I had never personally played anything like it and it blew me away. Their acquisition of id worried me as id has been producing content I have loved for so long. I was an outspoken critic of early footage of the new Doom game, but I have to say I think id/Bethesda have done a great job and I am really enjoying it. I would be very interested to see what they can collectively create with the Quake franchise.

In terms of development, these days it all seems so interchangeable and the developers seem to be acting on the whim of the publishers and there is no real unique design flare with many games. The power is held with the overarching franchise/publishers and the product has to earn. We see this with the CoD titles. Different developer every release but they essentially all release the same game with some minor changes. In many respects the franchise is too big and it is stifling development. I suppose that is why I have always liked Molyneux as his ideas always seemed to have flare, to bring something new or quirky to a game. Black and White was mind blowing back in the day, at least for me anyway.

I think for me that is what is lacking in modern day games - it is such a huge industry that nobody is taking any risks and one element which I think is key to creating memorable and ground breaking titles has been missing, in my view, for a long time: Ambition.

Overall build quality. Production costs for the Super Slim were cheaper yet the price remained the same as regular slim, i.e. no real benefit to the consumer. If I wanted to get a PS3 for cheap, my best bet was an older model 2nd-hand. Which of course I did. I'm not sure about the hard drive space though, I get the feeling the Super Slim got a smaller hard drive for the entry level version, but I may be wrong on that. Doesn't matter too much since one can install a 2.5" hard drive in there, same as PS4.

Anyhow, looks like we're gunna see Watch Dogs 2 at E3. I was excited for it before it came out, but it released a bit of a disappointment so I never bought it. LEt's hope Watch Dogs 2 doesn't follow suite.
