Works from new moon which is also new month. Full moon would indicate midway through a month.
News filtering in because the Saudi Judicial Committee meet to discuss the sighting of the moon then they announce it. Reports are that they have confirmed tomorrow as the first day.

Yes without seeing the moon as it is impossible isn't that the case, so why do some folks term a day later as the day they start the holy month? Is it a sect thing or a position on earth thing?

There's disagreement often as to whether a UK viewing is required or if its okay to follow another Muslim country. A large proportion of the UK muslim community will follow Saudi Arabia. Others Turkey, Morocco or a UK sighting.

Some people dont trust Saudi Arabia because they claim sightings where it is mathematically impossible. But Saudi Arabia is the home of Islam which makes it difficult.

Quite well coordinated this year.

I think it's a mixture of both. There have been many debates by scholars on how it should be seen and all sorts of discussions on what constitutes a 'sighting'. Some say you have to physically see it which may be impossible on a cloudy night, and others approach from a more scientific viewpoint.

I go with the Saudi's based on the fact that we are supposed to be a collective in our celebrations and different days just make it awkward!

Interesting.
I'd have thought by now physical mathematics would take precedence, but even then I suppose one then would have to determine a site on which to base the assumption.

As for fasting, do most use Saudi time, or do most actually use sunrise and sunset for the duration in their physical location? Does it matter? Is one seen as more pious than the other?

Follow the sunrise & sunset of the physical location your are in.

Facts don't matter in Religion :)

Timings wise the overwhelming majority I know follow UK times as it's still feasible for us to do so.
In some countries (think Scandinavian countries) it's pretty much impossible to stick to the timings. In that case it is best to follow the nearest Muslim country.

People often forget that the point of this month isn't to starve yourself but to learn patience, remember God and those less fortunate and to better yourself on a spiritual level.

They can supersede, I wasn't planning a jibe, take the Christian calendar, there is more and more suggestion now that they might unify the timing of Easter, and set a fixed Ester period each year going forward, rather than having it vary by the moon, with an offset to it can't correspond with Passover, which was the original method of determining it.

So if most timing is now called, when there can't be a physical sighting of the moon, then I'd suggest they have moved along.

As for fasting in regards your physical location, that's rather tough for some folks, quite the penance.

Most sensible way to do it!

Ramadan Mubarak everyone, gonna be long and difficult this year. Good luck all to those keeping them this yr.

It depends entirely on the proportion of Muslims working in the business, 25% like in the link you posted sounds like an extreme example, and even then it only says 25% of his business is fasting, it doesn't say how many of them are unable to work. Time off work should certainly be unpaid which should go straight to funding temporary arrangements. I doubt its as big a problem for most businesses who employ the odd Muslim.
