Ramadhan 2016!

Had to deal with some very grumpy staff today due to the mix of hot weather and fasting.
Doesn't seem very healthy to me but whatever floats your boat I guess.

That must suck for Muslims in northern Norway or Iceland, etc. Whilst Australian muslims and muslims in Argentina will be barely inconvenienced. I'd never considered that before.

EDIT: And Ramadahn Mubarak (sp?) to you.

At this time yes, but in13/14 years the shoe will be on the other foot, for reasons I don't quite understand the lunar calendar has 12 moons (I think synodic lunar months) per year in the Islamic faith, about 354/355 days, so Ramadan shifts by ten days each year. Eventually the month will be during our winter and will be a fair bit less hardship for those celebrating, unless you happen to be in NZ or AUS.

Not been as hard as I was expecting, trying to go for walks / cycling about 30mins before fast opens. Burn some of that fat :)

You mad man! I can barely do the 20 minute walk into and back from work!

3 days in and it's not so bad. Having a consistent napping pattern is key to the fatigue. Not feeling the hunger so much but it's early days.

Working out good for me so far!

Yeah not feeling the hunger at all. It's the sleep or lack of that's getting to me.

Total respect to those who can fast like my Manager and girl colleague who sits next to me.
I feel I'm doing my bit by not drinking or eating in front of them.

Tbh you shouldn't feel like you need to do that. Part of fasting is to exhibit self restrain. I certainly have never been bothered by others eating around me.

If anything I feel guilty that others sometimes apologise for eating in front of me. I try not to advertise that I'm fasting.

If you are doing that on your own accord then fair enough, but don't do it for any other reason. Obviously stuffing your face right in front a fasting muslim is just plain rude, but as a muslim living in a non-muslim country, we should not be offended by people eating around us while we fast. Becoming upset or offended by this just means you've kind of missed the whole point of fasting.

Agreed, it's sometimes funny when people feel the need to hide food. It's my choice not to eat not yours! You go ahead and enjoy :D

How we getting on then? 15 down, roughly half way!

I came down with the flu last week meaning I had to miss a couple fasts :(

Feeling much better this week so back on it. Also trying to do some light weight training in the effort to force myself to sleep around this time! Still not got the sleeping pattern down! All in all not too bad though. :D

Who has the most authority to speak on such a subject? afaik there is no pope of Islam/Muslim.

Generally in these circumstances there will be a local decision made based on the Muslims and mosques that are affected by things that concern them. These decisions are based on the sayings in the quran and the actions of the Prophet (pbuh) - known as Hadith. Most of the time it's just a case of making a simple decision, it's supposed to be fairly easy and straightforward in cases like this.

Worst case scenario, common sense is used - the point of the month isn't to starve yourself after all!

Same here. They stare at the fridge a lot, mind you, but they don't take time off.

Katie Hopkins isn't one to think things through before starting to write something.

About 100 quit where I worked once. That said they were supposed to be working 12 hour days in August in the northern Sahara... But they knew that when they signed up and there were plenty of others that didn't. It must have been difficult for the others though.

Not a particularly common issue in the UK mind! :p

Why is that rude ? They should know that not everyone will be fasting, whether someone wants to stuff their face is up to them.

Works from new moon which is also new month. Full moon would indicate midway through a month.
News filtering in because the Saudi Judicial Committee meet to discuss the sighting of the moon then they announce it. Reports are that they have confirmed tomorrow as the first day.

I can help - there's an amazing thing called Google and some nice people have even plotted the various moon phases against certain dates:-

Yup half way through already - unfortunately not been able to keep any this year (like last year) - makes me really sad but at the end of the day health comes first.

Think the calculation works out at 33years before we will see fasts this long again (doubtful I'll see them again in my lifetime :( )

Please remember us (dua's appreciated!) not so fortunate enough to be able to fast during this blessed month - its really saddening :'(

Jazakallah Kair (May Allah swt reward you with Good)
