What Would You Do?

That's not inflation. What nvidia have done with the 1080 is totally different. They have priced it like a top end card because it's the fastest available at this moment in time. They will be happy to crush the price when they release the ti version, knowing that it will become immediately redundant.

Just look at the 980. When the 980ti released, who was buying a 980? They couldn't even sell them at the reduced price let alone the release price. It was, and still is a struggle to sell a 980 second hand. Yet the 970 continued to sell like hot cakes.

The price of the 1080 has got nothing to do with inflation. The card exists for 3 very shrewd reasons:

1. Make the 1070 look like a tremendous bang for buck alternative.
2. Make the 1080ti look like a tremendous bang for buck upgrade/alternative.
3. Squeeze as much cash as possible during its 6-9 months on the throne.

The irony of all the justification posts in this forum, is that by their very nature the people who post them really should know better. ;)

Pretty much spot on. Except that Nvidia will probably jack up the price even more for the Ti version.

The inflation comment in the previous post made me laugh. As if such a huge jump in price could be attributed to inflation

The graphics card on my kids computer has blown so need to pick up a new card.

I have enough saved to pick up a new high end card and give him my 390.

I seem to have two options buy a 1080 I can live with £550 and one or two reasonable custom cards in this price (unless its gone up since I looked yesterday).

The other choice is to pick up the new a.m.d card at the end of the month, wait and pick up a high end card at Christmas.

1080 seems to me the best option here (I only have to buy one card the old one gets used).

Anyone think of a good reason as to why I should wait?

The only thing that is holding me back is I would prefer to pick up a more expensive card from evega or msi, I have the cash but not willing to spend £600 to £650 on a card.

This makes me lean towards the cheaper a.m.d and wait to see how things stand at the end of the year.

If my kid had not blown the card I would be waiting it out.

Do something other than gaming for the next three weeks? It is Summer, after all! :)

The price jump isn't that high, I paid (I can't remember exactly and can't find an invoice kicking around) around £500 for my 980's, £570ish for my 980Ti's and £650 for my 1080's.

That's a pretty linear increase over the course of a couple of years, nothing more than a few hours work or an average night out.

Lets just agree to disagree and say some peoples perception on the value of money isn't the same as other peoples.

I think the 1070 is your best choice. More value for money than the 1080 and holds up well at 1400p. If you do opt for the 1080 then I don't imagine you'll have to upgrade until you make the jump to 4K.

Others are suggesting the 480, which is excellent value. However, to me personally at least, I would grudge buying a new card that didn't feel like an upgrade over my current card. From what I can tell the 480 will be about the level of a 390.

Cards for a 14 year old kid and he will be waiting for three weeks minimum for release and availability.

I could tell him he will have to wait for the summer to end and in the mean time commune with nature instead .

I am sure he would respond well to that line;)

That captures my mood. 1070 does not though at its launch price. I have £700 saved with about £550 earmarked for graphics, could spend more but not inclined to do so.

I would prefer to pick something up that will last until 4k. Basically I don't want to pay the early adapter tax but have to buy soonish.

h4rmyOny is correct its the summer. If my kid is distracted as he is at the moment I may get more time for availability and a drop in price on the 1080 when supply picks up.

If not I may just pick up a 480 give him the 390 and sell the 480 down the road or keep the 390 as a spare in case of further teenage fireworks and blow outs.

I would prefer the 1080 just not paying £600+ for the card I want. I don't expect price performance value at this end of the market but it's outside of my comfort zone.

If he had blown the card later in the year would have been better. Bad timing.

heres my plan, sell the 390 and buy 2 480's, one each for you and your son then when the 1080ti comes out buy it and upgrade your son to 480 crossfire

I was considering buying a 980ti a week before the 1080 was announced. I've now purchased a 1080 and awaiting delivery.

I've upgraded as my current card is not the best at 1440 (possible manufacturing fault). The way i see it youre only going to have the top card for a few months before its dethroned so why not buy the top end once in a while :D.

I should have a 980ti. Ordered one a while back but it kept on 'getting lost' in the delivery process. Got so close to launch of new cards a picked up a 390 as a stop gap.

Not so bothered about being king for a day, 1080 would last me a while until 4k. Its ideal in this regard.

Play it by ear and wait until my son really starts bending my ear. If 1080 is widely available and I card I like around £550, get it, if not another stop gap card from a.m.d.

I got the 390 new for £200 (some compensation for hassle with 980ti). Price performance just about right I think. If the 480 has a slightly more grunt for the same price, may be good for a year. Particularly if a.m.d can increase performance with drivers.

I find the 390 ok at 1440, few games I would like a bit more speed.

It is probably all I need but I am a gamer so what I need and what I want are not the same thing

That's how inflation works.

A Golf GTI in 1996 didn't cost as much as a Golf GTI now in 2016. Houses in the 90's didn't cost as much as houses now.

There's no reason technology would be exempt.

The increase over 980 to 1080 exceeds most other comparisons.

At launch, Overclockers had their own and most desired brand ref cards at around £439.99, the cheapest ref card being Inno3D at £419.99
https://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18626392&highlight=900+series

The cheapest 1080 REF is the KFA2 at £524.99, the gap is even wider when you consider the prices of the custom cards at the top end.

Cheapest ref 980 & ref 1080:
£524.99 - £419.99 = £105 (25% increase in price)

MSI 980 Gaming and MSI 1080 Gaming:
£649.99 - £469.99 = £180 (38% increase in price)

That's a whopping 25-38% increase in price from 980 > 1080 in the UK over 20 months.

That increase exceeds the average house price increase (Even in Greater London) over the same period by quite a considerable margin. Obviously not blaming Overclockers for that, that's just Nvidia / Partners doing.

By any measure - the increase in price on the 1080 is considered excessive.

The 780 actually launched at a higher price than the 980, at £549.99 for cheapest ref.
https://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18514597

But 4 months later the 780 had dropped in price by £100-£130! (Even for custom cards). Mainly in response to AMD, same thing happened to 980. I'm hoping like others that the 480 / 490 (If launched) does the same.

Which is why for this guy - i'd say wait a 4-8 weeks to see what happens.

Anyone considered the pound nose dive that could happen if we leave the EU? We could see a large price increase on every import if we do.

"MSI 980 Gaming and MSI 1080 Gaming:

I have an msi 390 great card good cooler. MSI 1080 would be my preferred choice but not at that price.

Defiant306 being Scottish I think I would be worrying too much about the inevitable referendum vote that would see the U.K finished, Scotland going its own way and an angry isolationist southern neighbour getting more angry, isolated and powerless.

The price of graphics cards will be the least of our worries.

Its not just a vote to leave the U.K. Its a vote to split Britain as a nation state.

If the UK votes to leave the EU then the Scottish will (rightly) demand to re-do their referendum on independence. After all, their vote was based on being part of the EU. And with the current SNP dominance in Scotland, they'll get their re-referendum or there will be blood. Again, I really don't want to see Scotland leave but it's absolutely the right thing to do that with such a radical change in circumstances a second referendum be allowed. And in a second referendum where a UK was leaving the EU, Scotland would this time vote "Yes".

If Britain votes to leave the EU, it will break up the United Kingdom.

To stay on topic Britain becomes like the M.S.I 1080.

I like M.S.I. and have a history with them, a feeling of brand loyalty and trust but when the price becomes too high it's goodbye M.S.I.

Sigh

Its already been highlighted that the Pound will likely take a nose dive against other currencies as markets adjust to the change and the likely effects following. We will see worse exchange rate increasing goods and services.

Please don't go putting words in my mouth as well thanks and lets keep it on track since its about Graphics cards.

p.s I just noticed you're location. I think you may be reading ' being Scottish I think you should.... rather than "being Scottish I think I would"

I conceed that I might have incorrectly read that, the referendum is sore point for me. I accept that the percentages went a certain way. But would prefer to move on and focus on other things like graphics cards :)

Away I was considering the fact that imports might be a thing to think about in this as those cards might a bit more expensive once OCUK have to start paying the changed exchange rates.

Its made me consider whether to put in an order now for 1080 custom, but I'm kind of hoping to see a 1070 custom. But I'm not sure if the 1070 custom new exchange rate ends up closing the gap on the 1080 custom at the old exchange rate since its likely we will be able to other one but not the other.

One thing you have to consider is we don't actually know that bigger cards will be out by Christmas. I'm personally just going to assume no sane priced big cards until around this time next year.
