shooting in gay club orlando

People have short memories, it took the government a good number of days to retake control of London. I don't live in London anymore but I work with people who do - they were very, very worried because they had no means of defending themselves or their households against the gangs of thugs.

Oh great...... so arming everyone would solve that would it? the thugs would have guns too you know, nothing would change.

They'd have guns, you'd have guns. You all have a greater chance of killing each other now. Progress.

I don't support arming everyone. The thugs already have guns - someone got shot and killed during the London riots. The perps have got away with it.

The riots were sparked by the shooting of Mark Duggan. Arming everyone, including more police, isn't the solution.

They probably speak to thousands and thousands of people 2/3 times. They don't have the resources to follow every single one of them around 24/7.

If reports are to be believed though he was on an FBI watchlist. Now I'm going to assume this means that the FBI are not sat in a florist van constantly watching him, rather that he's on a database somewhere.

Now at what point do you think it would be a good idea to flag an (automated) warning about him? Is it when issuing his firearm licence, when issuing his concealed weapon permit, perhaps when he bought the handgun, or perhaps only at the assault rifle purchase?

The FBI had spoken to this guy 2/3 times and he was still able to do this :(
Obama said:
I just came from a meeting today in the Situation Room in which I’ve got people who we know have been on ISIL websites, living here in the United States, U.S. citizens, and we’re allowed to put them on the no-fly list when it comes to airlines, but because of the National Rifle Association, I cannot prohibit those people from buying a gun. This is somebody who is a known ISIL sympathizer. And if he wants to walk into a gun store or a gun show right now and buy as many weapons and ammo as he can, nothing is prohibiting him from doing that, even though the FBI knows who that person is.
Guns for everyone.

So he was apparently bi polar and with a history of aggression.

And once again the "extremist" has a history of mental illness, and once again an American spree killer with legally held guns has a history of mental illness.
I'm seeing a pattern to the American spree killers that suggests that religion has very little to do with it.
Pretty much all of the spree killers have made claims about it being for one reason or another, but most of them have had issues with mental health, or previous violence.

I believe the UK police/security services did a study recently into the various UK extremists who have gone to join ISIS, or committed acts of violence and the common factor that stood out more than the fact they were supposedly Muslim, as that most were known to have mental health issues and not devout Muslims* prior to the acts that brought them to the public attention, or were criminals before they converted.

I would like to say I'm shocked this sensless killing, but it's reached the point where it feels like the only shock is the sheer number of deaths, such events are becoming almost routine. My thoughts are with the families, and victims for what little that matters.

I wasn't thinking of him - someone else got shot and killed during the riots. In Croydon I think. Like I said some people have short memories when it suits them.

And how would more people being armed have prevented that exactly?

The fact that pretty much the only riots this side of 2000 resulted in a single gun-related fatality actual speaks volumes for how right we have it with our gun laws.

Thanks Obama

What for?

He's tried and tried to do things to protect the public from people who are known to be high risk getting guns, but the NRA and (mainly) republicans have blocked every single attempt.

There isn't much the President can do about most things due to the U.S. legal framework and constitution without the assent of congress, at least not for any length of time.

As has been posted above, even people who are deemed high enough risk to be on the "no fly list" are able to get as many guns as they want without any issues.

As I recall, there were pot shots taken at police helicopters etc too. It is a wonder more people were not killed!

Feel for Obama, it's the one huge regret he's had every since all those kids were killed.
Really is ridiculous, farcical even that it can't even be discussed in congress.

Sad thing is that statement will probably push up firearm sales as people will be worried about other whackjobs who can pickup an ar15 or other similar weapons with a wait time of... 0 days.
