Xbox Scorpio

They have caught Sony with the pants down here.

What like MS did with the DRM game management - and Sony just totally undercut them.

MS have shown their cards, Sony will be able to respond. Its not going to hurt Sony at all. In fact quite the opposite. Sony have the ball in their court now.

not that it matters, the mindshare is mostly with Sony and this is good for competition.

Be interesting in the coming months to see what happens.

But they've already said they will not talk about NEO.

They have been known to change things last minute before based on the Xbox conference.

When the XO was annoucned in all it's online-only DRMness, they altered things to take advantage of it.

I wouldn't be surprised if we do get something on new hardware now.

Thing is Phil is out on a mission, anything Sony try and counter with Phil is going to step and go above it.
Plus, all full backward comparability, instead of having to rent out games again ala Sony.
That and they can offer cross play/ buy.

I would assume if the Neo is meant to launch this year at some point it still allows MS to tweak their specs to ensure "most powerful console" tag?

Undoubtedly. Because Sony has got to cater for its own VR headset, it's a bit constrained as to when Neo has to come out. Microsoft have the luxury of time.

Actually for Sony they are pinned down when they want there own VR headset to come out, seeing as its being made to work with the PS4 in its next state.

Its a shame the performance metrics are as they are, kinda hard to work what the real specs are. Might do some number crunching on the memory bandwidth to see if that could include HBM2 but seems way too low for that. That number is more like GDDR5x on a 256bit bus...

One thing to say about the TF figure is dont relate that to nVidia GPUs, its only effective to qualify that against AMD ones (even then its nowhere granular when you consider the memory employed)

Erm...didn't NVidia tell everyone what the 1070 (6.5) and 1080 (9) was in Tflops?
Yep but currently a 6.5 TF Nvidia is more powerful than a 6.5 TF AMD card

Its not that accurate when comparing outside the family of processors.

Interesting they categorically said Scorpio will be the most powerful console on release. That's a pretty bold statement to make unless you already know the specs of the competing console, have tied up an exclusive deal for the top end console GPU/CPU for next gen or have left enough wiggle room to up spec if needed between now and then. 4K VR could be a real doozy...

Pragmatically there's no way MS can allow Xbox to not be the most powerful console for the next gen after the XB1/PS4 thing even if they have to throw billions at the project.

For me the buy once, play on PC and Xbox is interesting as I'm generally a PC gamer but enjoy X1 games with friends. Coupled with backwards compatibility even to 360 MS seems to be finally getting back into its stride for gamers, doing penance for Games for Windows :-)
