I have now got windows 8.1 looking/feeling nice to use, pretty much like windows 7. Why change stuff when it isn't broke, but then again you can say that with the previous OS too, but ms is going backwards not forwards in my opinion.

I'm using a bit more of a balanced version of that kind of dark aero glass look in 7 and can't get anything even remotely close in 10 - with Windows 10 up on my 21:9 UW IPS on one side of my desk and 7 up on the 1440p gaming TN on the other there is no contest - Windows 10 looks utterly **** even with the IPS going for it.

Its just a shame now I have everything how I like in windows 8.1, I will have to upgrade to windows 10 before too long to get directx12. But hopefully by then tweaking win10 should be easier, because when I tried win10 a few weeks ago I couldn't get aero glass working at all, so I gave up and went back to win 8.1

They really should have just included the following themes in Windows 10.

  • Windows 7 Aero
  • Windows XP
  • Windows Classic
I actually liked the classic (Windows 2000 style) theme, sure it was boring looking but i just like the fact it was simple and clean..thats what i like.

I dont know how people can say win10 looks better then win7 and how the earth can win7 look more dated then win10?. Win8/10 is going back to old school, looks wise.

Windows 7 looks slick, clean and mostly modern - I can see though that the overly bevelled (especially with default settings) look can be a bit reminiscent of a trend that went out of fashion around 2000 or so.

Anyone who thinks Windows 10 looks better seriously needs their eyes tested - I can see how some might prefer the more serious look but there is a significant lack of polish and overall cohesion with Windows 10 aesthetically.

^^ When my mum got a Lumia 950 or whatever it is Windows 10 phone I could kind of see what they were going for UI wise - it doesn't look too bad on there in fact I'd almost say it looked good but they've completely failed in the translation of that look to the desktop OS IMO.

Which they have completely failed to do :p.

Absolutely agree. I'm all for Microsoft designing a brand new UI from the ground up to replace Windows 7. In fact, I think that the best thing for the end user would be to allow the Linux style desktop environments, but that's another argument.

Hell, i'd even support them putting up different DTEs on the store for a couple of quid each, as long as there's a good selection of default ones as well.

Serious look? Windows 8/10 looks and feels so cheap.

It also feels cheap. There are no tactile buttons. Things just change colour. There aren't even any properly pressed buttons. Everything feels lifeless done on the cheap.

there like always, it's even on taskbar from fresh install.
However unless you're on preview I wouldn't bother using it. latest version is good though

Even the icons are awful. Look at those crappy documents/music notes and so on.

What got me was the earlier public builds where icons literally looked like someone with no actual artistic ability knocked them up on their lunch break in MS Paint - in every case high quality icons for the same thing, fitting the style required, exist in previous OS that would have done fine as place holders at least even if they planned on something new down the line - by no exaggeration even Windows 3.xx had better looking ones in its icon libraries.
