Is GTX 980Ti better choice compared to GTX 1070?

Reminds me of the arguments about 970 vs 780Ti when the 970 came out.

Except that now, I think we can look back and easily see that the 970 has pushed ahead of it fairly convincingly whereas before it was slightly behind it.

What that tells me is that even if an overclocked 980Ti edges out an overclocked 1070 right now, this may not be the case 6-12 months from now. You also lose out on 2GB of vRAM(though that wont be a huge deal at 1080/1440p).

Not too mention the 1070 does show an even bigger gap in some DX12 titles ( Hitman for example) which could make a big difference moving forward.

Certainly some good A sync gains in the 1000 series^ Not that relevant right now but come the end of the year it might be and if you are buying a new card now and want it to last, it might be worth thinking about DX12.

1070 is faster by a good margin than the 980ti. Enough benchmarks show it.

Let me rephrase that. The 1070 is faster than the Titan. And by a good margin. The 980ti now takes 4th place. You would need to overclock the 980ti by a big amount just to match the 1070 let alone overtake it.

Pascal has built in features some for vr and multi monitor support etc that 9 series doesn't have?

If I were buying second hand Maxwell now, a TX would be my go to. Under £400 and all the VRAM in the world so adding a second when they are even cheaper is another option.

I own the TX now and plan on buying the MSI gaming edition 1080 when they are in stock but only because I cant be bothered with SLI. If I COULD, then another TX would bring some serious power

No plans for VR - kinda dislike the idea of wearing a cycling helmet, snowboarding goggles and hdmi/usb wires sticking out of my head whilst gaming lol

Got second hand Gigabyte 980Ti Gaming G1 for £300 on that auction site so I'm sorted

I'd say no, The 980ti is not the better choice, It has more ram, better vr performance, a smaller footprint and once you're done with it it'll sell easier a couple of years down the road.

Heres some 980ti, 1070 & 1080 gaming results for 1080p 1440p and 4k.

They start at 1m 32s.

its a shame because my 1070 really struggles in BF4 and its a bad gaming experience, my 980ti eats it up for breakfast and is smooth as butter

must be the 980tis chunky memory bandwidth and raw power.

Again people are making the mistake of looking at benchmarks comparing stock 980Ti against 1070. The 980Ti OCs better than the 1070 as long as you avoid ref.coolers.

Any benchmarks showing cuda performance of 980Ti v 10xx ?

From what I have seen in a benchmark between stock 980Ti and 1070 FE, 1070 is better. If you take custom cooled 980Ti that has clocks pushed a bit there is no contest between the two - 980Ti will always win (or most of the time..)

To say 1070 is faster by good margin is exaggerating a bit I think..

In the dx12 benchmarks it's faster by up to 15fps so that is significant.

Not really fair to use the custom cooled 980ti argument as I have no doubt a custom cooled 1070 would be faster again.

Don't forget this is in day one drivers too.

Essentially at present you can get a second hand 980ti for £350 which has far more power draw, runs hotter and slower yes slower than a brand new 1070 for a mere £40 more. No brainier?

Consider the difference between the 1070 and 1080 then check out the Rise of the Tome Raider benchmark on here. Not sure drivers will improve much for the 10xx gen1 as it really is little more than die shrunk Maxwell gen2. 1070 < 980Ti < 1080.

Depends what you are doing. If purely for gaming then no, i'd go 1070 as driver optimizations are going to be better for the newer tech.

If you do 3d work with gaming i'd go Titan X over rather than a 1070 or 1080 for the 12gb vram.

Not everyone oc's and of course it's a silicon lottery out there. Stock vs stock is the only fair test.

Every benchmark out thus far puts the 1070 ahead of the 980ti. My 750ti plays bf4 just fine so I suspect you have a faulty card
