Dubai - Work move - Pros and Cons

For 2 years? Hell yes, that's nothing in the grand scheme of things. Give it a go, if you don't like it then you'll be back before you know it.

As a follow up, she has started doing her own research and is becoming quite positive. To be honest I think the leave vote has made her feel that there is a wider world outside of Britain that she wants to experience.

Have you been over to Dubai at all? I've been, admittedly only for a week, but it's probably the last place I'd want to live especially now I have kids. Absolutely no culture, the place feels soulless/fake and the heat is unbearable. I'm certainly not averse to living outside the UK, I did so for five years but I'd not consider Dubai.

I had to laugh at the 'lots to do' there post from someone. If you look at *every* single Dubai thread people go there, do a dune buggy ride and go to Ferrari World. I can imagine the novelty of those things will wear off quite quickly.

I haven't been but would expect to make a trip soon if I end up with the job offer. I have quite a few colleagues to speak with to get an understanding of "normal" life. Plus, financially it will give us a variety of travel opportunities as a family.

As someone else has mentioned too, think of the money you'll be able to save. Your kids will get the experience of living abroad and understanding other cultures and if anything it should do well for their education. Think of the stories they'll be able to tell people.

Okay it's not for you, but you're unfairly judging somewhere in very generalistis terms. Have you lived there or even been there?

To be fair you don't need to have lived somewhere to condemn it when the law in black and white punishes so many innocent people. To take children there would be unethical.

My only question would be what do they class as core utilities?

What we class here as core could be different there

Okay....well we are poles apart on that. So we'll just leave it at that. I have no reason to stand up for it but just glad there are more open minded people in the world

You must have gone to a different UAE to me as I found it to be completely different. So much to do and lots of culture to soak up too. More than you can do here or at least just as much.

Education is pretty good if not excellent there depending on the school, so I don't get that comment.

I'd jump at the chance. Sounds like a great opportunity. Dubai is a pretty cool place too.

Absolutely this.

I don't understand the comments about education. I doubt OP or his wife are retarded or something and are perfectly capable of schooling their kids even if they have to do it at home! 2 years in a foreign country will teach your kids far more valuable things than 2 years in the national curriculum.

If you were alone it would be another matter but the whole family and only 2 years! Do it!!!

The education is totally fine. There are myriad well performing schools to choose from with many curriculums.

The schools can be, however, expensive. You need to factor that cost in.

I lived there for a few years, and my sister has been there for 15. One thing I learned is you'll not find a balanced thread on this forum about the place.

2 year paid vacation? now that is worth considering :D

your kids will experience and learn a lot more there than they will in the UK for those 2 years. no doubt they'll pick up a lot of self confidence too.

I have family living in Abu Dhabi & Dubai a lot of them have kids and they love it over their, one of my cousins has two kids who were born over their he said finds it very safe & good for a family life style, the education should not be and issue I don't why people are saying this? have you guys even been to Dubai?

The cons will be the heat and humidity & getting used to different country i guess, I would also make sure you read up on the on laws.
