Is a 2010 model with under 50k on the clock a bad idea? They seem like a hell of a lot of car for the money. Not too concerned about fuel costs, tax or insurance, but worried about servicing costs and potential repair bills. How expensive do you reckon these will be?

Engine wise theyre very similar to the one you can get in the Saab 9-3 and isn't inherently unreliable but can get expensive at times - stuff like the coil packs which are 120 quid each and there's 6 of them etc. I don't think they'll be a terribly expensive car to run but small niggles could add up.

That said, if you want something with that engine that's well equipped and fast in a straight line then you'll get much more for your money in the 9-3 anyway

They're actually quite an impressive car to drive and vastly better to throw around than the Saab - but you'll pay a premium for it.

Nobody really knows what they are so resale could be difficult too

So long as it's got history etc then nope, Will have the usual costs like most Vauxhalls nothing too special unless the engines had some mods done too it.

Happy with having just front wheel drive when you could pick up something with four for around the same money?

They are 4

Easy car to dismiss but they're surprisingly good if you're willing to forgive the steering. Really quite expensive though for what they are. At least in comparison to other models in the range or a Mondeo with a remap

I have always liked these, but felt a bit underwhelmed when I drove one at a VXRPower day. It didn't feel at all like it had over 300bhp.

Can't really advise, but I REALLY want one of these too so nice to know I am not completely alone :p

I thought it was the best car I drove at the VXR power day a good few years ago. Preferred it to the Astra VXR.

How much would the servicing be? Would a car with around 45k miles be likely have parts starting to fail?

I know these are difficult questions to answer without knowing more about the car, but was just interested in some ballpark figures.

I'd still prefer to get a german saloon, they look way more classy, but this just seems to tick pretty much every other box. I wish the styling was a little more toned down though, looks too shouty. I have also driven various Insignias in the past (mainly diesel rentals) and quite enjoyed them.

It's really not down to mileage with most cars, a 45k car that's been poorly maintained might be falling apart where a 100k car which has been impeccably looked after might be perfect. Stuff like ensuring the right oil is used (not just the cheaest) at the right intervals is absolutely critical on those engines. How much are these going for these days?

You need to check the life left on the front brakes as the discs are very expensive.

My father in law has the 2.8 in a Saab Aero, it is pretty quick but not great on fuel 22 around town and you need a long run to get it over 30mpg. It feels a fairly lazy engine due to the tall gearing.

Always a fan of the Saab. For the performance and price I'd definitely take one over the insignia. Looks are subjective but again I'd go Saab.

Different car, thats an Aero with XWD, the black one is a bona fide Turbo X. Look at the 0-60 :)

If you want the Insignia chassis then the new 9-5 is pretty much the same thing. Arguably better value but really hard to find and not a sensible purchase, its the only Saab thats really hard to find some parts for. Part of me would still love one though

Looks a bit slow to me, slower than a focus st.
