Vauxhall Insignia VXR

Focus ST does it in less than 5.4?

Was just pointing out the difference between the 2 cars posted anyway, not making any comment on how fast or otherwise they were

Lol no, it doesn't. :p

About a second slower than that.

In fairness, the Insignia is the better equipped, better looking car, but that is quite a leap in price...

That Legend is a fairly rubbish alternative. Nice car and all, but not really the same sort of thing!

The CC 3.6 would be my pick... :)

They are 4

Easy car to dismiss but they're surprisingly good if you're willing to forgive the steering. Really quite expensive though for what they are. At least in comparison to other models in the range or a Mondeo with a remap

Which Mondeo would you remap to provide a comparison to the VXR?

How much would the servicing be? Would a car with around 45k miles be likely have parts starting to fail?

I know these are difficult questions to answer without knowing more about the car, but was just interested in some ballpark figures.

I'd still prefer to get a german saloon, they look way more classy, but this just seems to tick pretty much every other box. I wish the styling was a little more toned down though, looks too shouty. I have also driven various Insignias in the past (mainly diesel rentals) and quite enjoyed them.

It is a German saloon.

I also drove one on the VXR power days and wasn't too impressed, if you want something fast point to point I imagine it will be good but it's not very involving and it doesn't do much to hide it's weight. S4 probably wouldn't be much better in that regard to be fair.

Why does the Saab with the 2.8T hit 60 1 sec quicker than the VXR? According to AT stats. The Insignia is listed as 6.7 seconds which is not that impressive for 320bhp whereas the Saab is down as 5.5 which is quick for a big car.
The Saabs linked to look great. I never knew they done the Saab with that engine but I would rather have one of them than the more expensive VXR.

Like I said, one is the turbo x and the silver saab is an aero xwd. The Saab is lighter for a start but the turbo X has a stronger gearbox so the torque limiter in 1st and 2nd is removed - hence the 0-60 time. The turbo X also has an LSD, bigger brakes, self leveling suspension and some better trim

The 9-3 is NOT a big car, it's similar to a 3 series so a lot smaller than the insignia. With the Xwd system it loses the boring handling that it always is criticised for so it really is a strong alternative to the insignia

Have you driven one ? 4 wheels being driven would never have fixed the horrible boat like wallow from the diesel 9-3's I used to have to drive which was what made them so poor.

I guess if they'd seriously beefed up the suspension and rigidity, but that's assumedly completely ruin the ride too.

If you look up manual vxr's they're similar 0-60 anyway, slight increase due to the weight but nowhere near a full second

Yes I have. You cut criticise one model for being wallowy when it's a boggo diesel model. The aero spec suspension is firmer than standard but not too bad and pretty compliant. It's softer than a lot of counterparts but not boat like at all.

The XWD cars add a lot of grip and are surprisingly nimble. They'll happily hang their tail out in the wet if that's your thing too.

I've driven some horrible boat like entry spec diesel insignias, I wouldn't say to ignore the Vxr for that reason!

I hear what you're saying, but entry level insignias are a world better than the 9-3 imo - regardless of what they do or don't share component wise.

Anyway it's not really a sticking point I simply don't know hence interested

I clearly have bonkers suspension preferences too as I think my vrs handled really poorly as standard and is very soft for an apparently stiffer, "sportier" model that seems to get praise elsewhere

The Saabs seem like a lot of car for the money, but I just don't get along with the looks ... they just awkward to me. That 9-5 looks quite nice though, but even then, only from certain angles.

I should also note that I'm coming from a crappy Mazda 3 sport, which I actually think feels quite quick. I've never driven anything much faster than that either.

What engine in the mazda you have right now? Presumably a 2.0 n/a? Those really aren't that fast, I'm wondering if you would be able to scratch the itch with less of a jump!
