Brexit thread - what happens next

We actually have a huge car industry atm, albeit for foreign-owned car companies using us as an entry point into the European market.

So this all depends on what we have to offer the world in trade. What do we actually offer? Like some countries make cars. Others collect oil.

What does Britain do?

financial services which is highly linked to being in the EU.
a lot of industry is based on an entry point to the eu, which obviously now is up in the air. if we don't join single market, I do see an exodus of companies.

unless UK goes for EEA/EFTA type deal and accepts free movement then it will stay of course here. The whole issue of financial services will be a massive bargaining chip that the EU will use heavily in their dealings with the UK.

Access to the single market means allowing freedom of movement for workers. It isn't a condition of the single market, it is (part of) the single market.

You can't restrict freedom of movement for workers and go down the EEA/EFTA route. As someone mentioned, Switzerland has restricted freedom of movement and is now facing sanctions.

freedom of movement for workers would a good compromise (token measure that at least could allow us to ban more criminals and make the Romanians who come here with no jobs illegal)... but we currently have complete freedom of movement for anyone within the EU regardless of their employment status

Romania will veto that. I guess the membership has its perks uh?

The exit deal only needs a qualified majority vote.

Hopefully it will be the European Council(or rarther nominated representatives of) that takes the lead in negotiations... so chances of grownups being able to sit down and sort out a sensible deal are a bit higher

The EU already does free movement of labour. But you need to be able to look for work in a country in order to exercise that right, and you need some security if you lose your job or you are open to exploitation.

Article 50.

which also states

However, if the final agreement cuts across policy areas within the preserve of the member states, such as certain elements of services, transport and investment protection – as many recent EU FTAs have done (for example with Peru and with Columbia) – it will be classed as a ‘mixed agreement’ and require additional ratification by every national parliament in the EU.

SO at some point they are going to have to all agree on a lot of the points for UK's deal on exit.

That's not true. At present, we have freedom of movement for those with a realistic chance of finding a job. In theory, we can kick out anyone who doesn't.

Unfortunately, the government has done a poor job of enforcing the rules.

As written, article 50 could be interpreted as the EU coming up with a deal and then offering it to is without is even being in the room.
