What hot dogs do you use?

Ideally barbecued bratwurst, but for quick and dirty purposes, Waitrose smoky polish something or other are quite good.

I'm sure this make's me a heathen, but I actually quite like microwaving the cheap ones. Acceptable alternative to dry frying imo.

Are you near London?

Wondering if the big 'markets sell them, just not around here.

Literally on the London/Kent border. They never seem to be sold packaged, always at deli counters.

I literally buy Polish Kabanos every week. They last so long and I just love munching them as a snack. That spicy smoked pepper and caraway seed taste is to die for.

When I do them I just get a big pot of simmering water, chuck in onions for 10 mins and the hot dogs for the last 4. They come out perfect for hot dogs.

I do fry them too. Anyone who doesn't like frankfurters, egg, chips and beans belongs in a nuthouse imo.

Not even sure where to start with polish/german ones in the world foods section. Perhaps I'll just get a few next time.

Lidl do a good authentic Bockwurst in the chilled section.

My better half is German and they are the same ones you get in their German stores, just avoid the ones in glass jars.

You can get better from German butchers but the Lidl bockwurst are pretty good.

If you want to do bratwurst on the grill then this is a pretty good method.

So if I'm in Asda/Sainsbury's/Morrisons/Lidl or whatever, and I go to the World Foods section, what am I looking for that will be more meaty like a hot dog or sausage, and less like something that needs to be sliced like salami?

Not sure about the others but Lidl specifically sell "bockwurst" in the chill section.

I have little knowledge of german sausage. Looking it up, bockwurst seems to be the type of thing I'm after, but I don't know the difference between them, bratwurst, weisswurst and the rest.

Love the Tesco or Aldi bratwurst, the Lidl ones are too thin for me.

Costco do the Rollover dogs or there's another brand (Chicago Best or something) that's a 1/4 pound dog that they sell in the cafe that's immense.

In vast metal vats, tons of pork trimmings (made up of testicles, snouts, ears etc) are mixed with the pink slurry formed when chicken carcasses are squeezed through metal grates and blasted with water.
The mush is mixed with powdered preservatives, flavourings, red colouring and drenched in water before being squeezed into plastic tubes to be cooked and packaged.

I don't eat hot dogs.

Tastes nice and in moderation doesn't do any harm.

Mmmmm hot dogs.

What missinformed ignorance.
