Evening all,

Still getting mail addressed to the previous owner after over 2 years... For the first couple of weeks I was dropping it at the estate agents at their request but quickly got bored of this so started the whole 'return to sender, not known at this address' thing...
Now it all just goes in the bin.

What should I do with it? or rather how can I stop it?

All you can really do is either bin it or return it as not known. I'm still getting occaisional stuff for the previous owners, but it's only been 6 months. Fortunately for them, they're literally 5 doors down the road (they went from a 3 bed to 5 bed) and I'm a decent guy!

If you know where it's coming from without opening it (if it's stuff like bank statements), you could write to said companies to try and make them aware that they've moved.

I kept returning to sender and posting them back in groups and it dropped to nothing after 6 months. 2 years is a bit much though! Is it just rubbish or actual mail?

Should I need to do anymore than 'Return to sender. Not known at this address'?

Actual mail I believe... I know they sold up to move abroad but spent some time in a village near me before they went, I was getting Spanish Visa type paperwork... all looked very official and important. Along with banking paperwork.

Put it back in the letterbox with "not known at this address" on it.

Back in my letterbox? :D

I get this loads, delivering previous tenants mail to the new tenants, just put gone away or not known at this address on the letters and put in the postbox.

A sticker will be put on them saying the same thing and they will be returned if there is a return address although a lot of companies don't bother updating records it seems and they keep sending regardless.

5 years later we still get the odd one. Going by the clues they're often debt collection stuff. Not a bit surprise as we were pretty sure the previous owners were about to get re-possessed.

Been in our home for 15 years and every Christmas we get a card for who we guess was the previous occupier.

It's a small personal handwritten card signed with just the first name. No return address etc.

For the first year after moving house I would send stuff back with 'Return to sender - not known at this address' written on the front.

Now I just bin it. Including the bank statements from their Spanish bank account and letters ffrom HMRC for the previous owners business.

We're not getting much now, it's mostly junk but we were getting all sorts of official looking post for the first 6 or so months.

When the previous owners moved out they didn't update the records for their company with Companies House. I didn't feel comfortable having their business registered at my address so I contacted Companies House who came very close to striking the company off the register but they did eventually update their address.

I don't understand why people don't use mail redirection, costs £60 for a whole year of service while you sort your **** out.

Still getting bank statements, Xmas cards and various other things for the past owners almost 7 years after they left. Goes in the bin now.

Same here, still after two years we get thier mail!

Can't be important if you 'still' having mail sent to your old address.

Mainly bin them unless they look interesting ;)

Shock horror at needing to pay someone to manually redirect your mail at the local sorting office for £5 a month. It's more for peace of mind and ease during moving. It's inevitable that you miss various institutions when updating address details, so this enables a nice time frame and easy indicator for mop up exercises. But i also view it as a security feature, i know i don't give a rats ass about the previous occupier. So if they have any mail, official or not, it just goes in the recycling box. Which is left out for any would be unscrupulous character to dig though. It's quite easy to become a victim of fraud with very little information.

But then again I could buy an extra sandwich every month with that £5, such difficult decisions
