Buyers remorse

Wow, astonishing.

Non refundable deposits are taken for things that cost people money when they are bought, i.e a loss to the business.
Why are you trying to charge the guy 100quid for not having lost a penny.

That aside, it would make you a decent human being, giving him his money back. He might really need it, again without you losing out.
Sounds like your trying to make a very quick very dishonest buck imo by even attempting to ask your "rights".
Unless the station was a substantial distance away and you lost out, give him his money back.
Shame.

ps... Any bank reader from any bank works with any card. I'm making the assumption you have one too, since I have 3 in this house. You could have sold it there and then with that piece of info.

Which would probably still be more inconvenient for the OP compared to just doing a bank transfer.

Might make him think twice about wasting people time when it costs him to come back and get it compared to a little bit for the OP on what he was told was non refundable. ;)

How is wasting both the OPs and time and the other guys time a good result?

You would only do that if you are secretly hoping it makes it not worthwhile to get the deposit so you can keep it.

In which case, just keep it rather than trying to find an excuse.

Ask him if he paid a deposit for a flight and then suddenly changed his mind, would he get it back? Answer is no, so why is this any different?

I haven't ever had to pay a deposit for a flight. I've always been asked to purchase the ticket.

I would certainly give him the money back, it's obviously a lot of money to him and for him to travel and leave the cash he was obviously a genuine buyer. It's not like he's given you the runaround for weeks, it's not even been a day. He's probably sat there gutted at the moment. Be nice? Or is that too much to ask these days.

Yep. This is good advice. Life is bad enough without everyone being eejits to each other ala GD.

Well you can pay a deposit for a flight then pay the rest later in the same way you can for a holiday. Google it. :D

I can see travel agents doing this, but not airlines.

They can do this because most parts of a package are fully refundable. Even plan tickets can be refundable (flexible tickets, and taxes for all tickets).

Is the car a bargain ? If he should buy it because it'll be useful to him or someone he knows, then tell him to just finish what he started and your'll keep it open a month for him.

If its worth more like 500 or less and you are basically got lucky he didnt haggle better. You could give him 50 back and the rest is your relisting fee and for your personal time taken. Thats totally reasonable.

I know someone who sold a car in under 3 minutes recently, turned up started the engine and said yep he's your money. Paperwork handed over, done. If you are getting hassles dealing with him, its fair enough I guess

Unless its really put you out and you have lost another sale, I would give the lad his deposit back and benefit from being a nice person and not an arse :)

This...

If you are struggling for cash and by that i mean cant afford food. Take a £10 off for petrol.

Ignore the keyboard warriors and give the money back, have a little compassion for others. He obviously made a genuine mistake otherwise he wouldn't have traveled from Nottingham by train at his expense, who are you to punish him more?

Tell him to used confused.com and lie about himself as much as possible, make at least 20 quotes and price the car at £5,000 (that's what it might be worth to you, subjective). Cheap bangers attract higher premiums.

Charge him £100 for this advice, which you will take off the full purchase price of the car.

If it were me I would take pity on him and give the full amount back and not punish him further for his naivety.

We all make mistakes and he may not have expected the sky-high quotes or thought things through properly if he's quite young.

Try to treat others how you'd like to be treated yourself in this kind of situation. Maybe take a few quid for petrol at most, but don't be a ****. :)

Why bother? The guy has said he can't afford the insurance anyway.

I need to know the car IG I guess, I bought a car very young for 200 only and my neighbour handled it all for me, insured it for me and just wanted me to drive her everywhere for a while which I did. After my birthday I did it all in my own name, worked out.
OP says legally and yep he can keep the money. We are speculating for all I know the OP needs the money for his rent asap, Im just saying its not one sided. I doubt that buyer has phoned/quoted over a dozen insurers, tell him goto moneysavingexpert.com
