Active shooting Austin Texas.

are you from the nra, tilted towards criminal, like in pretty much every western country where it isn't much of an issue.

"Pretty much every western country" doesn't have a greater number of legally-held firearms than their actual population, for a start. That number doesn't include illegal firearms of which there will be millions also.

And no, to answer your stupid question, I'm not from the NRA, but I have enough common-sense to see that removing all legal firearms from a population that clearly wants them isn't going to work and isn't going to bring a miraculous end to these shootings.

Gun control is possible, better background checks and owner assessments are possible. Lots of things are possible, but removing guns from America? Impossible.

It really isn't impossible at all, start with better control, remove the bigger weapons and work your way down.
You think it is impossible is silly. Its just a mammoth task over a long time frame. But it is absolutely possible to change culture.
House holds with gun owner ship has already fallen and continues to do so, 50% in 1970s and 35% in 2000s and 34% in 2012
A declining minority and that's across the board not just large cities.

The NRA et al and all of America's keen gun owners aren't going to idly sit by and let that happen. A slow gradual erosion of their rights will be abundantly obvious and all it'd do is push legal firearms owners to retain their guns illegally instead. Ultimately, if it can be done, why isn't it being done? They've had tragedy after tragedy and all it's done is increase the number of firearms manufactured and increase the number of firearms owned.

And yet the number of legal firearms has risen by over 100 million in the past 20 years. People clearly still want them.

oh boy are we really gonna have to have every gun crime in the USA rammed down our GD throats now ?

I'm sorry you were forced to come in to this thread and have this discussion 'rammed down your throat' :(

If only there was some way people who don't want to read about this could avoid having to come in to this particular thread......

Lol why isn't it being done. Because of us political system. Which is obviuse to everyone.
Biggest problem is lobbying. Which is expensive
People who like something fund groups like NRA, unfortuntley the other side are not organised and do not lobby anything like as much. People are waking up to it, but its hard to get money. You know have active atheist groups fundraising to counter the religious groups, but ATM they don't have a fraction of the money or lobbying monies of the religiuse groups.

Again to say its impossible really is silly, it just takes an extremely long time

I see, so all that needs to happen is for the American political system to undergo radical reform, pro-gun control people to rally together and somehow fund a campaign, gain as much support as possible, lobby for their interests and somehow beat those who are firmly opposed to gun control and want to keep their guns and have successfully maintained their position of influence for decades.

I look forward to visiting a gun-free America in 30 years then, if there's anything left of it by then.

Ok deal.

'You' just write about the "politically motivated" 50+ victim ones, something that is generally not normal for a country that has over 300 million firearms and not the everyday drunken idiot ones.

The thread title, given recent events, implies something major was going down and in fact, it was complete nonstory on the world stage.

Can i suggest Mod edit title to "Drunk BF shoots GF and her mates after an argument" until there is some evidence.

If you cant understand this then you are stupider than most on the forum. Congratulations.

Lol 30 years who said anything about 30 years.
It'll take a long time, but you have to start somewhere and that could happen with right president. Its not like restrictions haven't already happened in the past.

its funny how this mentality of punish everyone for the actions of a few is fine, until its something you care about.

thousands of people are attacked by dogs each year and require hospital treatment...why aren't we banning dogs from civilian ownership 'oh because its not the dog its the owner'
84 people killed by a truck in france. why aren't we banning trucks?

i agree that in some states in the US their firearms law is very lax, in that almost no checks are required for ownership. i do believe a licencing system should be brought in and responsible gun ownership taught upon application.
however a ban on guns is ridiculous. you're punishing millions of people because of the actions of a tiny minority.

muslims have killed thousands recently. should they be banned?

(actually this is GD, i can probably guess the answer to that, lol)

I've always been of the opinion its the licensing and regulation that is the problem rather than proliferation - in other countries with a high density of gun ownership but more common sense regulation there are massively lower incidences of gun violence.

When I spent some time out there most of the pro-gun people I encountered had almost a religious thing for their amendment rights - using a firearm in anger/criminally was something akin to sacrilege of their rights - a mindset I don't think can easily be understood unless you encounter it (and even then its not easy to comprehend).

A few common sense tweaks would probably see gun incidents drop by like 75% without significantly change the level of ownership and access.

It'll take a very long time at this current rate of achieving almost nothing, I agree.

It's the US so not exactly news.

Really this, I'm sorry for the people involved but do we need a thread here every time there is some sort of shooting in the US? According to the BBC article on American gun violence (here) there was 372 "mass shootings", shootings which kill or injure 4 or more people including the perpetrator, there in 2015.

I can understand having threads for big terrorist events but for every little bit of crime in another country of a type which that country frankly has a lot of seems a bit over the top ....

He does have a point though. We seem to have hundreds of threads almost identical these days. Why not create a few space saver threads?

[SPACE SAVER THREAD] - Ebay Issues
[SPACE SAVER THREAD] - Office Chairs
[SPACE SAVER THREAD] - US mass shootings
[SPACE SAVER THREAD] - Politics

Oh my. Such upset.

'I' wrote about nothing other than your unnecessary reply.

The thread title implied exactly what it was at the time of posting

If you want to get upset over a forum post them I would suggest it is you that is stupider than most.
