Bit harsh. Can't label all players under the same banner. Even just being able to meet up with friends would be good. You can trust them to not go around destroying everything...

I much prefer the extremely rare possibility of meeting other players, it would just make the encounter much more epic than just having something such as warp drive to meet your friends on some planet.

If NMS could use Journeys ideas about co-op interaction it could work really well, like if everyone was an alien to each other with no common method to communicate but the knowledge of a common ultimate goal.

Being online isn't that important. Being online just lets you see other peoples discoveries and meet up with other players (I think), though the chances of this are tiny. As long as he can download the patches he'll be good to go

I saw a video somewhere of the spaceship travelling to another planet, and said something like "20:00 minutes to destination" or something similar along those lines

Do we have to literally just sit there and wait 20 mins to arrive, or can we do things in the mean time?

Warp drive (I think that's what its called, I haven't played since Saturday) cuts that down to about 1 min max. But yes in theory even at warp speed there will be planets that far away.

You can be totally offline, just make sure you go online for at least the day 1 patch both for the new features and get the server refresh done
