Windows 10

I went to defrag one my HDDs just now and noticed a new, oddly named drive in the list. Its named \\?Volume\. . . and has no assigned drive letter.

I recently updated Win10 to v1607 and never saw this additional mystery drive before that. Any idea what it is? I can only think its the recovery partition but a google search doesn't give a clear answer.

The upgrade for me went ok but it did kill my kodi settings. I had it setup so the red button on my remote was mapped to the media centre green button which in turn started Kodi.

After the upgrade it killed that mapping and no matter what I did I couldn't get it working. In the end I had to download eventghost and use that for the mappings.

If anyone is having problems installing Microsoft Edge Extensions, where it either doesn't appear in Edge extension list OR it says it needs to reinstall to repair, do the following:

Navigate to Settings, System, Apps & Features and uninstall the extensions from there.
Next, go to run, and type wsreset.exe

Store will restart and then you can install again.

I just got ABP installing after doing that and it is great :)

I won't be doing a lot of anything since my laptop is still ramming one end of itself up the other and locking up with windows 10, and tried to play nice for a few days until it did it again (it looks to be identical to my old windows 8 and 8.1 windows explorer lock up with additional do it at anytime not just when I'm trying to open file explorer along with a massive dose of stop the hard drive from working so that the only way to recover is through a forced shutdown since how I originally managed to get it working was to bash the file explorer icon on the task bar a few times and it got its act together and restarted windows explorer, but now when I tried the taskbar button bashing all I got was the blue spinning circle whenever I hovered the mouse pointer over the taskbar which meant it was trying to restart the troubled process but couldn't because the hard drive wouldn't start back up) so I'll be attempting to back up everything that hasn't been backed up and I'll start with a windows 10 reinstall, but if that brings up the same results then it'll be going back to windows 7.

Does anyone have an issue with icons and windows not rendering? They will be transparent, not show the content, but you can either wait, or right click on the window to select 'move' and then the windows contents will then show up. For Icons.. I mean the ones next to the clock on the taskbar where you have to click the arrow to show more. The ones in there don't always show.

I thought this might have been an AMD driver thing as if I used afterburner, the issue went away. Now I have a 1070, and it is still doing it.

Are you forcing any kind of AA? Windows 10 seems to hate forced AA and/or AA optimisations like Intel's conservative morphological anti-aliasing.

Haven't used Fences (application) have you?

I used default settings, except I always set to 'high quality' mode.

I have no idea what that is.

no one else gets this? I can take photo's if needed.

Are you seeing this randomly or when you close certain gfx intensive activities?

I occasionally get the transparent icon bug in the start menu after I have been playing a game that is quite demanding.

Then as I hover over the icon the normal look comes back. Havent quite found a fix for it yet, but for me it happens more when the gaming resolution, isn't my native desktop resolution.

It seems intermittent.

It's the above, but I also get empty dialog windows, programs not working sometimes. This seems to be solved (or at least it was before), by using a profile in MSI Afterburner. That just seems bizarre, because I don't even have to change anything, just use a profile. Seems like it is something to do with GFX, but what I am not sure of.

I finally found somewhere else on MS feedback site that they were talking about it, and it has been going on for months.

I also just noticed I cannot highlight or select things on the desktop (actually I can... there is a few seconds delay when and if the highlighting shows up).

The whole thing makes windows unresponsive. Seriously thinking about ditching insider stuff because they just don't seem to fix these issues.

Update: I had enough this morning, and opted out of insider preview. I simply rebooted the machine as it asked, and now windows works like expected. No lag, no slowness. I wonder if excessive monitoring/telemetry is being done that is impacting insider preview? There was no download for this, nothing was installed. I hope it stays this way and isn't just a fluke.

As much as I love new features and testing them, I also need to use my machine, so I think for the moment, this is 'Insider down'.

Omg im getting so annoyed at this crap now.. why is it such a battle to stop M$ installing Realtek drivers that im not even using cuz i have an Asus freakin sound card installed??? I set the Device Installation Setting to 'NO' but hey! M$ still install them anyway even though i have disabled everything Realtek ( device settings etc) on my PC.

How about giving ME the CHOICE to install which drivers I want.. ffs i'll be back on Windows 7 if this **** keeps up.

M$ are a joke.. Im surprised they didnt install some older AMD driver for me while they were at it.

Have you given it any thought as to why it is doing this?

Maybe your SoundCard actually is based on a RealTek Chip, and thats why Windows is trying to install the drivers for it?

Sounds like its doing the right thing, and you are trying to stop it.

My Asus Xonar uses Cmaudio, its works fine when realtek isnt installed.

And after it installs it decides to default to Realtek high Definition Output, so then i have no sound until i default it to Asus Xonar again.

Im sure if i dont want something installed then M$ shouldnt be installing stuff that isnt for a M$ product.. Maybe its just this stupid Asus motherboard which i actually regret buying.. should have stuck with MSI tbh.

Do you have both installed (as in an Xonar sound card, but the motherboard has Realtek?). If so, don't uninstall or try blocking the installation of the Realtek one - either disable the onboard audio in the BIOS or set the Xonar as the default - it should remember it, unless you're constantly unplugging devices.

Ok, sure, thats a bit irritating then.

Have you disabled the onboard audio?

Your speakers etc ARE connected to the Sound Card and not the OnBoard audio device yes?

Again, with it sometimes playing and sometimes not, it seems like the computer may be seeing two audio devices, so is there definitely ONLY the one device installed and enabled?

Im using the Front Panel with my Asus card aswell as the rear for 5.1 Surround. Theres some strange audio brand in bios that i've never heard of, something to do with Asus SupremeFX Audio? Anyway i disabled that, will see how it goes over the weekend.

Thanks for the heads up about the bios, it disabled HD Audio in there too though front panel still works, my previous Z68 build didnt have a problem with what im having right now so it must be the board.

I really dont like the bios in this Asus Pro Gaming, but i guess im stuck with it now.
