Clocking cars!!

Its amazing that new cars dont have a backup eprom that can't be erased.

Or does the industry NOT really want to stop it.

May get an Sclass on a 5k mile deal.....

Where did you go to get the data to spot a clocked car?

Have to say that I "believe" I was on the receiving end of a clocked car a few years ago. Had bought an E30 touring with below average miles (at the time). Looked in great condition, but whilst I owned it, had a litany of technical issues. I was sure that it had probably done another 100k more than the speedo said.

Yep this is very common indeed, its easier than ever on most cars with digital programmable odo's.

You have to be very careful of anything with multiple owners with seemingly low mileage :(

Just a quick google of 'mileage correction' brings up numerous individuals that will come out to you and do this for £50.

They aren't even hiding the fact that they are offering a dodgy service.

Offering the service isnt illegal, its in the same area as things like dvd copying towers. Nothing illegal about offering to reprogram a memory chip.

The online MOT history logs mileage at each MOT but think you need the V5 to check.

No I get that - most even have an 'Is it illegal section'. It's just the fact that it is so blatant that they are offering to clock cars.

You can check online, you just need the registration and make: https://www.check-mot.service.gov.uk/

People who were clocking old cars probably thought no one would find out about it. But now you can simply go there and check. If someone sells a car and does not tell you it's been clocked it's fraud.
Never looked on there before, quite interesting to see what your old cars are up to!

Just discovered that my grandparents Nissan was clocked somewhere between 2008 and 2009, from over 60,000 miles down to under 20,000 miles. (Just before they bought it, probably by the dealer they bought it from)

Not sure if I should tell them or not, it was 7 years ago after all! And the car has been reliable and has never missed a beat. They will be happier not knowing. :p
