Volvo V70 2.5tdi's

You bought a brand new genuine alternator for a £650 Volvo? Should have been a £40 second hand from eBay jobbie! lol :p

Sounds like a good deal so far though. Aside from that. :D

WHats it like on fuel?

So far, pretty good, fag packet calculation of ~40mpg mixed driving, given it plenty of right foot - after the Corsa DTI it's quite nice to have a diesel with a bit of go and a nice exhaust note!

Sure the remap helps economy, I'll brim it and run to empty and re brim for a better idea of its actual mpg.

Yes,not an oem Volvo one (£500+) nor the cheapest option from a pattern manufacturer, it's going to be used for towing (and occasionally powering the caravan from the car battery when parked) so I wanted a known good one hence opting for new, same goes for the battery, drive belt and indeed the tyres.

Sourcing and then getting a used one fitted seemed a false economy, there are quite a few variations of alternator for V70's and the potential of sourcing and paying to have a used one fitted to find it's the wrong one and / or shagged was a waste of time and ultimately money.

Yes the one I've got isn't cheap but it's guaranteed and should it fail the garage fix it for me without me having to pay for labour, plus I wanted it done quickly and don't have the time nor inclination to faff about sourcing either a cheaper new one or used and then arranging fitting.
I could have got part worn tyres, a used battery and second hand alternator for sure, would I have any faith in those components or thank myself for the saving should they let me down when I'm away in the caravan? I doubt it.

I bought cheap knowing it'll want work of some sort, what car of this age wouldn't want for something? As I said in my earlier post, I'm pleased that I didn't pay more for the car as chances are that had I done so I'd still have had to pay out on repairs to something or other on top of the higher purchase price.

Anyway, here's the tank....

The Volvo to the right has a better turning circle! :p

Armrest a bit flakey but the interior otherwise dirty but un damaged.

Can sympathise with the turning circle: my old 850 was so bad that a couple of multi storey carparks in London were pretty much impossible to use. The turning circle is worse than anything I've ever driven, and I've driven some cars with terrible turning circles :p

Watched someone manoeuvring an LS400 LWB around the tight multi-storey at work once, they were taking the ramps like an absolute pro, can't have been more than three inches on either side when taking the turns and they weren't hanging around. :p

I was actually quite impressed!

That older shape has aged really well I reckon, I think it looks better than the one Acme posted. The old 850R was an awesome looking beast. But who cares what it looks like really sounds like a lot of car for the cash and no reason it shouldn't be reliable

Looks very 90's to me, can't see how the one I posted doesn't look as good, but different strokes and all that!

I do like some of the Volvos of this era but the V70 isn't one of them.

Looks very comfy though... :)

Looked at one of those, it was £995, shagged, with a mere 420k on the clock, the one I ended up with whilst far from showroom fresh is infinitely less worn, inside & out. My lasting impression was the newer one seems not much different from the old.

There is a multi story in Hanley, Stoke on Trent - OC/UK land locals will know it - that'll be an absolute no no, every ramp wall has paint of every hue on it! - it's ridiculously tight!

Looks a good, honest bus that Ovlov
Aye, I took it to the local Eastern European staffed car wash on the way to work, it's cleaned up a lot better than I thought it would, I'll be going OCD on it at the weekend, it's got green crud in every crevice and door seal, but yes, it is what it is.

To me it's a Volvo estate, there pretty much all the same style give or take, I'm hoping having spent a chunk putting the expected issues right it lives up to this era's reputation for longevity.

I must say though I was struck how many 200k+ mileage examples of these are out in the classified ads, yet mere handfuls of respective German marques of similar mileage, it either speaks volumes of Volvos mile munching ability or, of how easily the Kraut tanks are clocked!!! :D

Reminds me of a late 80's 740/760 tbh!
I didn't buy it for its looks or driving prowess believe me!
Bought it out of need rather than want if you will but yes, fantastically comfortable very much more so than my previous e39 5's or even my much loved e38, you don't take it for a drive as such, it seems to take you!

Most certainly not a drivers car in any stretch of the imagination yet strangely once behind the wheel I really don't care....

Seen some of those era V70's for around £995 with less than half that mileage on the clock, seems the one you looked at was stupidly overpriced! :D

At £850, yes,£650 - compared to those in my area I looked at - seemed OK to me, sure I could have trawled the country finding better and / or cheaper but the time & cost & faff of doing so alas ruled it out not to mention no guarantee that whatever else I'd bagged wouldn't have needed similar repair work.

I looked at some with circa 100k that had either been owned by captain caveman and his ancestors, been clocked or both, not to mention the cheaper ones tended to be petrol (which for towing id rather a big derv) or auto which I'm told is a weakness in them.

...I predicted the alternator replacement!

:o
You did indeed, and tbh I was half expecting it wanting one when they said the battery was borked, sure enough you were right.

Can you please predict me a lottery win? ;) :D

Nonono I mean the moon mileage one you looked at was stupidly overpriced, I don't think yours was! :)

Reminds me of my 850, looks almost identical, inside and out.

I still like the styling to this day, they have that awesome stereotypical Volvo estate look that modern ones have lost!

I do think they've gained a bit of retro cool, hence why I prefer them to the slightly newer ones.

They don't have the barmy interior door handles that the 850 had though, think that's the only thing they changed on the first v70

That seems quite expensive for insurance! I pay £350 more for a Cooper S! (21, 2y NCB). I remember Clarkson saying something along the lines of "At this cost, you expect me to write the car off atleast two times a year?!" Just the once in this case I suppose? :p

Does seem a good barge and hopefully a reliable one, which is likely being a Volvo.
