Windows 10

How do I once and for all stop Windows from restarting my PC? I have changed it in group policy but this is ignored. I do not want my PC restarting at all, without my permission. Windows also now ignores the blind thing over the login password which I also changed in group policy to not display.

Not so easily any more - you can try 3rd party software - but even stopping the update service or sabotaging the restart task in the scheduler doesn't seem to work very well. I've pretty much given up any hope of using Windows 10 for any serious deployment any more. With the whole mess since the AU roll out and they can't see the need for better manual management of that kind of thing there is no hope.

How is anyone accepting of this? It is ridiculous. I'm already planning on getting a MBP on release and if I like it I think I may be taking my Windows PC off the internet. Or putting it behind a firewall to block everything to do with Microsoft.

at least 14915 is better than the old fast ring. settings app now works, as does start.
vpn software still kills internet connection on this version though. no issues when vpn is off. but if i enable it, only a restart will get internet back.

I thought I'd check to see if there's an update for Win 10, and it said there wasn't, yet a microsoft web page says I'm not running the latest version. Currently downloading 14...(whatever the number was). Probably all down to me messing with / tweaking notifications which I found irritatingly intrusive...

The only way you can stop windows from restarting your PC to install updates is to set up active hours which stops the OS from restarting until its outside that time (it doesn't stop updates from installing when you leave the computer for a bit during active hours), but from what I've heard there is a maximum limit that you are able to set.

This, of course only applies to the anniversary update.

Active hours can only be set to something like an 8 hour range and is static each day - I've never seen something to utterly stupid - many many people live far more varied life styles where often their schedule can be different day to day and most people's weekends different again to week days. MS really needs to get some people in charge of strategy who actually know what they are doing (to put it far politer than I want to).

Finally got the latest update installed. Through the official updater and now all is well.

But now the start menu is always displaying the alphabetical list of all apps, and I don't want it. Can I do anything?

Yep.. that's the way it comes now.

I've had a look and can't see any way to change it. So think you might be stuck with it mate. Unless anyone knows better.

I've been using Win 10 since early summer and try as I might, I just don't like it. Plain and simple.

I've bought a new build, its a good one too and the last thing I've got to do is a clean OS reinstall. As a gamer, is there any reason I should stick with 10 and not go back to the comforting familiarity of Win 7?

As above.

Out of interest... what did you not like about Windows 10?

I initially was a little unsure. But with a bit of effort / tinkering, I have it set up pretty much as I want it. And in some 10 months, zero issues with the OS (and that's a first for me and I've had every incarnation since Windows 95).

I just upgraded to windows 10 form windows 7 after building a new pc, It has not asked me to activate windows 10 it seems it got the free upgrade?

When i check system it says windows is activated?

Yep, I activated a Windows 8 laptop the other night for someone...

Small problem I have, about one login in five I'm told my Gmail/Live info is out of date and I need to confirm my settings. What's that all about?

Thanks.

Anyone found a way to get the Xbox app with all the other built in apps removed.

I removed them all through powershell and then readded the xbox app via the store. Everytime I go to load it up I get 0x406 error could not sign in.

If I create a new account with all the built in apps the xbox app works fine.

I really don't want all that junk i'll never use installed.

Im currently still on Windows 10 Home 1511 build I believe. Somehow managed to avoid having the anniversary update install in any shape or form.

I really want to try Forza Horizon 3 PC version but it looks like that I will need to update to the AU version of Windows in order to play it.

Have there been any updates that have fixed the missing drive issues as I do have three drives on my PC. One SSD system drive which has windows and all of my programs/Apps installed and two standard drives which I use for data storage.
