So the girlfriend has had a phone call today from the local Honda garage saying they have no records of how she paid for a service they did on her motorbike in august... Shes said she's not sure but probably on her card but after checking online in her account and the joint account there's no record... Although after discussing it I think I gave her the cash but again, I can't really remember...

Anyway. The garage will be phoning back once she has checked her accounts, I guess they're hoping she just pays them but I don't see why she should?

I'm all for honesty and if either of us knew for sure then yes I'd happily go and pay them but seeing as it is their **** up I'm reluctant to pay them...

What say GD?

So you had a service and neither of you remember if you paid?

A lot of local garages will bill you a few weeks after doing work, depends how they're run. Think I waited a good month before a bill before for sure

Tell them to go spin... Idiots, its not your problem they are incompetent. Surely they wouldn't give the thing back without settling the damn bill first? You would have got an invoice at least?#

I've had my various cars over the past 9 years MOTd, serviced, and general work done by countless number of garages spanning from the south and east coasts, to the North.

Never have I seen a garage bill me, or anyone else weeks after the work. Why would they??

"Oh, here's a Snickers bar. But it's okay, don't pay me now, pay me on 4th October."

They'd give you an invoice paid surely. Tell them you will donate the fee to an agreed charity since neither of you are sure, get an invoice for that :p

The service book has a stamp so something definitely happened!

When I took the bike in last year they asked me to the counter, ran through what they had done, asked for the cash and gave me a key... I don't see how she would've got away with the bike without paying...

The garage I use generally sends me a bill in the post, it is usual practice for some garages. Wouldn't your girlfriend have a receipt if she paid?

Same here but substitute 41 years.

Tell them you paid in cash and it's not your fault their record keeping is poor.

Who keeps receipts though? Just in case someone accuses you of not paying for a service a month down the line? I certainly don't.

I have a folder with everything relating to my car that I keep in my desk. It has every service receipt, MOT, tax letter etc. I find it just keeps things simple if you ever have to look something up or sell the car in the future.

If you haven't paid, then pay up. If you have paid then feel free to tell them and then ignore them.

I don't see what is so difficult. How can you not know?

I fail to see how you cant remember how you paid for a bill. Its not like going in a local shop and forgetting what you purchased.

No disrespect OP but this doesn't sound right to me. Who else would forget paying for something like this? (Especially considering the payment method which neither jnrw then just agreed you gave her cash to pay it).

Lets see the stand point of whose fault it is by using the thread about the traffic cone, wet tarmac and the customers property.

they probably keep records even if you don't and they seem to think she didn't pay, you apparently don't know if she paid

seems quite plausible you owe them money
