Hi guys, so im currently running -

Z97 Gaming 5 mobo socket 1150
16g ddr3 ram
rx480 gpu
and an i5 4690k @ 4.0ghz - water cooled

I have come into a little cash and whilst i can afford it, i am thinking of going up to the maximum cpu which is the i7 4790k...

I only use my pc for gaming/surfing...

In your opinions, is it worth me going for the i7 , as i cannot make my mind up?

thankyou all

Yeah not much point to be honest, you won't notice it. Depending on what resolution you game at you could spend the cash on a new GPU, but if you're at 1080p its not going to be worth it either.

i can game at 4k resolution easy with the gpu i have now.
imo the RX480 is an awesome card and easily performs well enough @ around 75-80fps with everything on max or ultra.

In that case, I would spend the money someplace else entirely! Or save it? :)

You're in that zone whereby in your tier, you've got good components, but if you want to go up a tier (I.e. 4K gaming) then its going to get costly.

If the system does what you want, leave it alone. At a push, get an M.2 if you haven't got one or maybe another another 480 and X-Fire?

For what 10-15fps more, you must be mad or a fan boy.

OP better off getting a freesync 1080 or 1440p or getting a higher refresh rate.

Can you not overclock your cpu to around 4.5ghz with your cooler, it should not need more than 1.25volts.

Yeah, i have o/c the cpu to 4.4ghz so far but i will try 4.5ghz and see how it goes.
As for gpu, i am perfectly happy with my RX :)

For me, i worry about temp of my cpu..

Right now @ idle im getting min 29 and max 47 (both idle temps).
Are they ok temps ?

Did you mean at 1080p res ? as the RX 480 won't do that well at 4K.

Oh i agree it wont do as well, but for what i play -( World of Warships ), its perfectly fine.
I was going to order a 1070, but in all fairness, after seeing what opinions i have on here and reading online and comparing both gpu's - i dont believe the gain is big enough, plus my RX uses such a small amount of power.

@OP

I was considering same thing as yourself (ie i5 to i7) and did not swap over as not worth it or gonna bring extra performance for my uses (similar to yourself).

My first i5 4690K comfortably OC'd to 4.4GHz with 1.18V, my 2nd [email protected] (been@this clock ~10mths). If your chip does not get to 4.5GHz+ I wouldn't be too fussed, even at 4.4GHz the i5 4690K won't be a bottle neck.

I dont alter the voltage as such, just let the bios do that for me and leave it on auto...
Should i do it manually?
