Well well well, what a coincidence percentage wise.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-latin-america-37537252

To sum it up, the Columbian government struck what seems to be a peace deal between the FARC guerrillas and the Colombian government in a war lasting 52 years.

To be ratified, it had to be put to public vote, and the public voted 50.24% against a peace treaty.

So what say you GD? Should the majority be counted and the loss of lives resumed, or what would the alternative be?

Personally I think they're daft not taking the peace treaty, enough lives have been lost.

Should 50.24% be counted as enough of a majority and the other side be told to deal with it? :p Joking aside this isn't brexit, people are dying becuase of this.

It is an interesting one - on the one hand FARC would get off relatively lightly but how do you reconcile that with future long term peace.

On the face of it, it seems like the people of Columbia consider punishing/not rewarding FARC to be more important than ending an armed conflict, which is a bit of a backward-looking position to take.

Presumably they're trying to take the political line much like the IRA of old, who knows how well it would work out though.

What, you mean voting to bite your nose off to spite your face? No nation would do that.

It will be interesting to see the results broken down by areas affected by the fighting. Like whether the people voting not to recognise FARC as a political party and with a rager for seeing justice done are actually affected by the violence or not.

If not for democracy you will have Russia.

Democracy where 50.1%, 50.24% or 51.9% wins or Putin's Russia, you decide my dear Boycey

Well that's a very fair comment that I didn't expect tbh! Very true quote too. Doesn't answer the question whether that 0.24% is enough to decide life or death though.

wow what an uneducated statement.
which is so far from facts its stupid.

Direct democracy is not the only democracy, nore should it be regarded as the best democracy.

you might want to read up and learn what parliamentary democracy is, and what most sensible countries have.

you are also saying no one should ever be able to change their minds. Therefore we shouldn't be able to leave as we voted in.

What an unclever reply. You do not need an education to make a statement nor is a statement more valid with one.

As defined by the Oxford English Dictionary. Democracy is government by the people; especially : rule of the majority.

50.24% is a majority and the will of the majority should be upheld, as it will be in Colombia, Britain and Hungary. If you don't like it, go to Russia.

just lol, do you even read what you type.

as you seem unable to use google.
I'll point you in the right direction

Direct democracy is similar to, but distinct from, representative democracy, in which people vote for representatives who then enact policy initiatives

All modern Western-style democracies are types of representative democracies

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Representative_democracy

notice how both are democracies.

so no your fallacy and errors, does not mean if you dislike direct democracy you must like Russia.

Brexit then Colombia. Elite self-assurance hasn't done well against Representative and Direct democracy this year. Will we learn in time to save America from Trump?
Notice how both results are despised, with attempts to subvert it. Therefore democracy is despised.

In situations like this, and places like Syria it's better to just put things behind you if it means peace in the future. Yes people (on both sides) did horrible things, but trying to bring all those to justice will mean no one will give up their positions. Why would you if you know doing so will probably guarantee a long jail sentence or death?

Ironically in Columbia it's not the elite that are losing their lives...

A binary referendum is the purest test of democracy.

He isn't saying it is the only democratic method. A parliamentary democracy we are all (hopefully) familiar with. But the more parliamentarians begin to ignore the electorate the more you move away from democracy.

People can change their minds yes, but its not a neverendum until you vote how the establishment wants you to (which usually only serves their interests).
