Slave labour in prison

...that generally those who are forced into committing the majority of crime are just that... forced into doing so by the situations they've been put in... and giving them an alternative to support themselves preferentially by contributing to society is actually a beneficial (to all) way of removing most crimes from the equation.

I have never agreed with this. An example would be near where I grew up a family with 4 brothers, 3 of which a touch wild when they were young but nothing that resulted in them been locked up. One of the brothers in and out of young offenders and eventually prison once old enough. Same household, same area where I grew up, same opportunities.

At some point it is the persons choice, not societies, that results in them becoming a criminal. I also know someone who grew up in the rougher part of Glasgow and he is now an MD of a large firm and doing very very well for himself. Growing up in such a rough place surely he should now be a criminal underworld boss, or did he make a choice to work hard and make something of himself.

I guess it's just the case that no matter how equally deplorable these situations are, we don't openly criticise our allies.

Just look how we cosy to Saudi Arabia and only pay lip service to all their human rights abuses.

?

Ukraine is an ally and it is a BBC article, they also criticise Saudi

I think we need to decide what we want prison to be. Is prison a repository for all of societies undesirables? In which case why are we letting any of them out again? I mean seriously, if all we do is detain and punish someone why are we surprised when they reoffend?

If we hope that people can be rehabilitated and become contributing members of society again then we need to make being in prison the 'punishment' and focus on how we help these people turn their lives around.

Prison as a deterrent didn't work for the Victorians, and it won't work for us.

As for prison wages, does it really matter what they're paid, so long as the wages are relative to the local economy. I.e. pay people £2 a day if you like so long as that £2 has the same buying power for the non essentials outside of prison

so the BBC and others are reporting that slave labour is happening in Ukrainian prisons because if prisoners refuse to work they're put in solitary.

yet we have the exact same happening in the USA and there is no calls from the BBC etc to call it slavery?

in the Americans case, here's the level of care being given to those with mental conditions who refuse work.

The USA is a very judgemental culture. Once you tick their "bad guy" box, they seem happy to heap any indignity and remove any basic rights from you. They have been doing this for a long time and it's one of the reasons the US prison industry is such big business.

Slavery is, aside from all the human rights and morality issues, also simply bad for society. One of the big social pressures that caused the Roman republic to collapse, I believe, was the increasing use of slaves meaning working class romans couldn't find work or when they could, wages were suppressed very low. Slaves compete with the paid job market and slavery really only benefits the owning class.

Though really that's a side issue to the gross suffering and wrongness of slavery itself. I mention the above simply for those who don't care about these things to show how it's bad for them as well.

Yes prisoners should have proper rehabilitation & given support to stop them re-offending once outside, but at the same time prison is supposed to be a punishment.

Prison is there for protection of society and to a lesser extent, as a deterrent. If you're interested in "punishment" that can equally be accomplished with fines and with far greater efficiency (prisons cost a fortune to run).

Why the hell are we paying them in the first place ?

Chain gangs = Reduced sentence
Work = Reduced sentence

On top of the above make them learn period.

They need money, then family / Friends pay for them and then its given to the prison service and the prison service give everyone exactly the same, £20 a week or whatever it is.

Good to know that if I murder someone I can get out sooner by earning money for the people who own the prison!

I'd want to work if I was in prison. It should be a choice, but i'd imagine most would want to do it rather than just sitting in a cell all day, every day.

Hi there

Pay them minimum wage as per anyone else not in prison, but then out of that wage take the following:
- National insurance
- Tax
- Rent for their cell
- Food cost
- Cost of any other consumables they need, bog roll, soap, cigarettes etc.

Let them earn just like anyone else but at the same time take from that wage the cost of their accommodation and living requirements.

So not slave labour but at same time their cost is living is paid for by themselves and not the government, the system or whoever it is who pays.....
