People who have pride in where they live are more likely to care about it - maintain standards or even improve things. That's good for everyone. If you ever go to small-town mid-west USA, where people are really patriotic, everyone keeps their front gardens in immaculate condition, their houses freshly painted, even in some of the poor parts of town.

It did jt realsed a statement saying jt was conducting disscusions but then the media backlash hir and they have now said they will not be removing the anthem from the ceremony

No. That's a cute little stereotype wrapped up in a pink ribbon of wishful thinking.

I've visited rabidly patriotic Texan towns with populations as small as 500, and the poorer houses there look just as rundown and exhausted as they do everywhere else.

The owners typically spend their money on cars and cable TV. The lawn and the paintwork are very low on their list of priorities.

Exactly. I'm pretty sure I've heard people on these very forums saying the anthem is crap and that they would rather God did NOT save the Queen.

What have 99% of people at Kings College done which deserves a singing of the national anthem?? This isn't Mohamed Farah and no one has won a medal for GB, nor is it the Queen's birthday.

I'd be well ****ed off if I had to sing national anthems at university even though I like it, and If I were the Queen I wouldn't want some random drunken plebs singing it. I love the anthem but random singing of it simply devalues the national anthem, it should be reserved for things which deserve singing of the national anthem.

I'm sure the Queen herself doesn't want Mahamed and his buddies from the student union milking and devaluing her anthem so who are we to whine?

If you like singing in harmony perhaps consider becoming a choirboy.

I don't think you've been to many small US town before.

The immaculate lawn and white picket fence is very much a middle-class suburban thing. The poorer, rural small US towns are a mix of trailer parks, dilapidated bungalows, rusting cars on the front lawn next to an ancient sofa, back yards looking like a junkyard with an old oil barrel for burning trash next to a mattress with rusting springs sticking out.20 year old rusting flat-bed on the front "drive 9which is just the muddier part of the front "lawn", multi-tone paint job and gaffer tap passenger window.

The housing areas with the best kept lawns and house around here re new developments out the west end with a very high assign immigrant population. the median salary is tw2-3x national average. they all pay for people to do their lawn and keep their garden pristine.
